Standing, sitting, and roomscale playstyles in VR, explained

How will you play?

Virtual Reality has quickly become a popular way to play video games. It allows the player to experience the game as if they are actually there via a headset and motion tracking. However, what players may not know is that there are different playstyles when it comes to VR.

There are three main playstyles in VR. These are standing, sitting, and roomscale. Each game can be played in different styles and typically tells you on its store page. Here are all the differences between standing, sitting, and roomscale playstyle in VR.

  • Standing: Games with the standing playstyle require a small amount of movement and for the player to be standing. The recommended clear space for this playstyle is about three feet in all directions.
  • Sitting: Games with this playstyle can be played while sitting down. It is recommended to have three feet of clear space in each direction. Playing in a rotating chair is also recommended.
  • Roomscale: Games with this playstyle require the player to stand, but the player also needs a larger amount of room for movement compared to the standing playstyle. The recommended space for this playstyle is six-and-a-half feet, but this may vary based on the game.

Before purchasing a game, verify what playstyles it is available in. Having the option to switch them allows you to rest your feet when needed and take advantage of your play space. Always check game descriptions in the store page for this info.
