Is Alan Wake scary? – What to expect from Alan Wake 2

If you've played or heard anything about past Alan Wake games, you know a bit about the intense, story and dark setting of its narrative. The game's sinister atmosphere can, at times, feel like something out of a horror game.

Taking all that into account, you may be wondering just how scary Alan Wake 2 will be. Here are all the details.

How scary is Alan Wake 2?

The first few games in the Alan Wake series, specifically the first one, had horror elements ranging from cult themes to outright jumpscares, but players can all agree that it became less scary as you progressed. For me, it was more of a thriller-type game, and it allowed you to easily overcome any fear or doubt you had by shooting the monsters in front of you. However, I believe the scariest bits of the game were created by the eerie atmosphere and underlying plot. Whether you were wandering through a dark house or through the woods at night, you were filled with an overwhelming sense of dread, as if something could jump out at any moment.

While players of the previous games can probably agree that they weren't all that scary, they should also expect more from Alan Wake 2. From the looks of trailers and gameplay videos, the game will feature plenty of trippy nightmare sequences, more terrorizing cultists to fight off, and even more jumpscares. We can safely assume that the settings will be even more detailed and eerie than ever before.

Similar to Control, we will get dark settings with a vibrant red color scheme, popping up at various moments. At the same time, we will get a chance to play a new character—Saga—who is investigating bizarre occurrences and disappearances happening in the town, which could surprise us with more unexpected terrors taking the shape of strange monsters.
