When you explore the fantasy RPG Soverign Syndicate, you’ll come across piles of Gears and Cogs. But what are Cogs, should you pick them up, and if you do, what should you do with them?
Should you collect Cogs in Sovereign Syndicate?
The simple answer is yes, you should collect cogs in Sovereign Syndicate. However, which characters collect them, when, and which sell them is more complex. This is why the game asks you whether you wish to pick them up.
During the game, you will take on the role of different characters, depending on the chapter you’re currently in. The main protagonists are Atticus, Clara, and Teddy.
- Clara and Atticus: Clara and Teddy can sell cogs, as they won’t use them. Who they can sell them to will depend on the chapter.
- Teddy: Teddy is a mechanical tinkerer and can use Cogs to repair a variety of items, as well as to help upgrade his robot companion Otto.

Who should pick up Cogs in Sovereign Syndicate?
It’s important to note that piles of Gears and Cogs have a more complex relationship with the Sovereign Syndicate’s chapters and characters than you might think. For example, during Chapter 1, Atticus will have an opportunity to sell cogs to Teddy in the Bathhouse just before the end of the chapter.
If Atticus sells Cogs to Teddy in Chapter 1, Teddy will begin Chapter 3 with more Cogs. This makes sense to do, as when you play Teddy you will need them in Chapter 3, so why not give Atticus some cash from Teddy, rather than Teddy having to buy them elsewhere?
It should also be noted that if one character doesn’t pick up cogs in a chapter, they will often still be there for another of your characters in a later chapter. But if you take them, they’re gone. For example, if you go to Cable Street with Clara in Chapter 2 there is a pile of Gears and Cogs by the entrance when you arrive. If Clara leaves them, Teddy can pick them up in Chapter 3.
Cogs can be bought and sold for 3s, usually from Darius (after Chapter 1). Before picking up any cogs, think about the financial situation of each character and plan accordingly. As usual in Sovereign Syndicate, there is no right answer. It depends more on the situation you find each character in due to the decisions you’ve made.
