Updated March 14, 2024

The Sea of Thieves servers are offline for essential maintenance - we'll let you know the moment they return. Please note that players on Xbox and the Microsoft Store will need to perform a full reinstall for GDK integration before they can next set sail. It's not known how long will SoT be down.

When you play a pirate, you can't expect everything to go as planned. I know I've had my share of ups and downs in Sea of Thieves, the worst of which was when the servers were down, and I couldn't play. This left me wondering why the Sea of Thieves servers were down and if there was a way to find out before setting sail.

Is Sea of Thieves down? How to check SoT server status

There are many websites to choose from when trying to check the server statuses of your favorite games. Sea of Thieves is a very popular game, so Rare Games (the developer) wants to make sure the players know if something is wrong. The options below explain how to check on their website or (in the absolute worst-case scenario) another one. You can also use our Beard Error Code guide to fix other issues in Sea of Thieves.

Option One: Go to the Rare Games website

Rare is the development company for Sea of Thieves, and they generally have the most recent status for all servers on Sea of Thieves. This is the most up-to-date option to check the Sea of Thieves server status since they have the information as it appears. To check the status on their website, you can follow this link: Sea of Thieves Status Page.

The Sea of Thieves server status page.

Once you're there, you'll see the servers' status front and center on the page. The image above shows the most likely scenarios when you visit the page. It will generally state that the servers are down immediately or shortly after they notice a problem. This should be the first page you visit if things have gone awry.

Scheduled Server Maintenance

Another advantage of this page when checking the server status is that further down the page, you will see if there is any downtime planned for maintenance. This will often give you ample warning so you know when you need to turn in your pirate booty.

Option Two: DownDetector

The downdetector page for Sea of Thieves.

Downdetector has one advantage over the Rare Games website: It provides accurate server status for many different games instead of just the games made by Rare. If you play a variety of games, this is an excellent website to determine server status and recent reported issues and downtime. You can use the Downdetector website to check the Sea of Thieves servers with this link: Downdetector Sea of Thieves Server Status.

When do Sea of Thieves servers go back up?

There is typically not an exact time when the Sea of Thieves servers go back online. The best way is to bookmark the Sea of Thieves server status page, as it gives a rough idea of when servers go back up. You can also follow the Sea of Thieves Twitter for updates on server status and more.
