Helldivers are shaking in their boots amid rumors that a much-feared enemy from the original Helldivers title might be making its way to the highly popular sequel. And they're right to be afraid because it involves underground cover and...tentacles.
Originating in the first Helldivers game, the Impaler is a tank Terminid insect that at first glance looks kind of like the Charger. But it uses its claw-shaped head to impale you and your fellow Helldivers instead of rushing you headfirst. And it does so by digging its head into the ground and then shooting up three sharp tentacles right underneath where you and your unsuspecting friends are standing. Sounds terrifying indeed.
The above post on the always-entertaining Helldivers 2 subreddit shows the work of a savvy data miner who unearthed some pretty telling filenames titled "Behaviorld_bug_impaler" and "Behaviorld_bug_impaler_tentacle". While the data miner does note "the model for the bug is not currently in the files" (even leading one user to speculate that it might just be cut content), they specify these files were just recently added to the overall files of patch 01.000.400. Suspicious, indeed.
Rest assured that, like all Terminids in Helldivers 2, the Impaler does expose its weakness when it burrows its head underground – at least if its behavior in Helldivers 1 is anything to go off of. When it digs its head into the ground, it exposes a set of vulnerable organs that certainly won't last long against the Helldivers' powerful arsenal. Sounds like things could get messy.
As always though, developer Arrowhead Studios has yet to officially confirm the presence of the Impaler, so do keep an eye on the game's updates in the coming weeks and months. And with rumors that an entirely new enemy faction (or two) might soon come to the game, I have a feeling we're in store for lots of fresh new content in Helldivers 2 very soon.
