How does Shapeshifter role work in Among Us?

Change into something more comfortable in Among Us.

The Shapeshifter is a new Imposter role added to the game in the “version 2021.11.09” update. This unique role allows Imposters to shapeshift into the appearance of another player, imitating them.

This works by adding an extra action button on the Imposter’s screen called Shift. When Shift is pressed, a menu with a list of possible Crewmates or even other Imposters to morph into appears. Selecting one will briefly put you into a cocoon, and when you emerge, you’ll take on the new appearance.

The role was first previewed in a tweet by the developer Innersloth in October.

But the new role was only added on Nov. 9, along with the three new Crewmate roles, Guardian Angel, Scientist, and Engineer.

Shapeshifters have a default of one per round, but like all roles, can be fully customized. This means you could have every Imposter as a Shapeshifter, or none. It’s up to you in your lobby whether you want these roles included, or more classic Among Us experience.

Either way, the Shapeshifter has a lot of uses for clever players. For example, you could blatantly kill while disguised as a different player. Or you could “accidentally” get caught venting while impersonating a different Crewmember. But with the cooldown on the Shift ability, and the cocoon being visible for a few seconds, the role does have its downsides, so it’s not overpowered.
