Baldur’s Gate 3 – How to Wake up Art Cullagh

Halsin is one of the characters you'll meet early on in Baldur's Gate 3, and one of his quests requires you to complete the Wake up Art Cullagh mission at the Last Light Inn in the Shadow-Cursed Lands. Naturally, you need to know where to find this NPC and how to wake him up, so here's how to complete the Wake Up Art Cullagh quest in BG3.

Art Cullagh can be found at Last Light Inn, sleeping on a bed in the first room to the right of the entrance (X: -65, Y: 161). (This is also where you'll speak to Counsellor Florrick in Act 2.) You'll find Fist J'ehlar tending to Art Cullagh and trying to wake him up.

To wake up Art Cullagh, you'll need to find the Battered Lute musical item and bring Halsin into the Last Light Inn.

Start by interacting with Fist J'ehlar to find out more about Art Cullagh's condition. She informs you about the patient speaking about a certain "Thaniel" (Halsin's friend), to which you should reply, "I've heard that name Thaniel from a friend of mine." Interact further to check on his personal effects and select the "I'll see what I can discover" dialogue option. After this, you must return to the Camp and speak to Halsin.

Assuming Halsin has already joined your Camp as an NPC, speak to him about Art Cullagh. Inform Halsin Art mentioned Thaniel's name. Halsin will immediately leave for the Last Light Inn, and you can find him next sitting on the bed next to Art Cullagh.

Interact with Halsin in this room to figure out more about Art Cullagh's condition. Through conversation, it will be revealed Art's final order was to investigate the House of Healing. The best way to learn more about Art's affliction is to visit the House of Healing and find some clues.

The House of Healing is located west of the Mason's Guild in the Reithwin Town area of the Shadow-Cursed Lands (X: -200, Y:49). At the House of Healing you'll meet a few NPCs, including the Malus Thorm boss. While you can fight and defeat this boss to get an item to wake up Art Cullagh, there is a method to eliminate him without starting a fight.

How to Easily Beat Malus Thorm Boss Fight in BG3

Malus Thorm is one of the Shar's disciples, whom you'll find in the main room in the House of Healing in Baldur's Gate 3. There you'll find him experimenting on a victim to teach the sisters a lesson about Shar's justice.

I highly recommend not being hostile to any of these enemies before engaging in conversation with Thorm, as it's easier to question him on Shar's true teachings. This act of deception will force the sisters to eliminate themselves, and Malus will do the same if you can successfully pass the checks.

Once you start speaking to the boss, you'll need to pass a series of Persuasion, Charisma, and Deception checks to go through this encounter smoothly. The first Persuasion check should be when Malus offers to cure you. Select the "The sisters aren't ready..." dialogue choice to start the trickery.

After this, Malus asks how to steady the sister's hands to inflict Shar's justice with more devotion. At this point, select the "Why not have them hone their skills on each other?" dialogue choice. This Persuasion check ensures the sister enemies in the room eliminate each other, leaving Malus Thorm alone.

The next step is to force Malus into his own trap; to do this, you must pass another Perception check. When Malus says he will acquaint you with the Lady's dark-fingered embrace, select the option to deceive the boss. My Wizard character had "Shar is the only path" as a dialogue option, and I went ahead with that choice. Lastly, plead with Malus to show the true path of Shar to force the boss to eliminate himself.

Once Malus Thorm is dead, loot his corpse to find the Battered Lute musical instrument, which is the key to waking up Art Cullagh. Save the game and return to Last Light Inn to speak with Halsin.

Return to the Last Light Inn to inform Halsin about the Battered Lute you found in the House of Healing. Next, you'll need to play the Lute to wake up Art Cullagh. The music instantly cures Art, who will wake up to reveal more details about Thaniel.

I recommend allowing Halsin to speak with Art Cullagh to learn more about lifting the Shadow Curse. Art Cullagh will redirect Halsin to the Shadowfell, which is where he met Thaniel, thus completing the Wake Up Art Cullagh quest in Baldur's Gate 3.
