Sorcerers can be one of the best classes in Baldur's Gate 3 with the help of their Metamagic abilities. Every Metamagic ability can be helpful for your spellcasting, but some are extremely powerful if used correctly.
Sorcerer Metamagic Ranked in Baldur's Gate 3
Sorcerers unlock two Metamagic options at Level 2 and one option at Level 3 and 10, so you will acquire many of the Metamagic options if you decide to build a pure Sorcerer. That said, here are the best Metamagic choices for a Sorcerer in Baldur's Gate 3.
7. Subtle Spell
Subtle Spell allows you to cast spells while Silenced, which can be very helpful against other spellcasters. However, Silence is too situational (i.e. it doesn't come up often). The other Metamagic options will be used much more, so Subtle Spell is not the best option, but can be helpful in some combat situations.
6. Careful Spell
Careful Spell allows allies to automatically succeed Saving Throws against spells that require them. While this can be helpful, it does not nullify damage like the Wizard Evocation Sculpt Spell ability. This Metamagic can be useful for spells that can push enemies who are near allies, but otherwise, it is very situational.
5. Distant Spell
Distant Spell Metamagic allows you to increase the range of spells by 50%, and melee spells get a range of 9m. This can be very helpful for keeping distance and reaching far enemies, but it is far too situational in my experience, especially since many encounters have difficult angles for spellcasters.
4. Extended Spell
Extended Spell allows you to double the duration of conditions, summons, and surfaces caused by spells. This Metamagic choice is a good option for Sorcerers who want to focus on support, as your buff and debuff spells can last longer. However, many Sorcerers benefit from using high-damage spells, so Extended Spell tends to be situational, given the limited number of buff and debuff magic in their spell list.
3. Heightened Spell
Heightened Spell can make targets of spells that require Saving Throws have Disadvantage on their first Saving Throw, which can be very helpful against difficult enemies with high Saving Throws. Heightened Spell works great with spells like Hold Person and Fear, and can boost damage for spells like Fireball and Lightning Bolt.
2. Quickened Spell
Quickened Spell is one of the best Metamagic choices because it allows you to cast as a bonus action. Since you can use both your action and bonus action for spells with this Metamagic option, you have a lot of freedom with spellcasting on your turn. The one downside is Quickened Spell costs 3 Sorcery Points, so you will have to use it sparingly.
1. Twinned Spell
Twinned Spell can be a Sorcerer's best friend in Baldur's Gate 3, allowing you to target an additional creature with spells that have one target. It can be used to boost your damage output and take care of multiple enemies, or for debuff spells like Hold Person, Slow, or even Banishment or Polymorph. Twinned Spell requires 1 Sorcery Point per spell slot level used, so it is costly to use, but very much worth it in many situations.
