Should you Disable the Steel Watch Foundry in BG3?

Disabling the Steel Watch Foundry will invariably anger Archduke Gortash, meaning you cannot take his deal anymore. On the other hand, Orin sends a few letters to your camp appreciating the efforts to take down the Foundry, and directs you to dispatch Gortash immediately.

This quest is related to a few others like Save the Gondians, Avenge the Ironhands, and Avenge the Drowned, so make sure to start all of those quests before approaching this mission.

Where is the Steel Watch Foundry in BG3? (Map)

The Steel Watch Foundry is located on the southwestern edge of the Lower City (X:-240, Y:-168) in Baldur's Gate 3. After reaching the Basilisk Gate, travel southwest past Baldur's Mouth, Sorcerers Sundries, and The Blushing Mermaid to reach it. (Check the yellow arrow on the map image above to see its exact location.) Getting inside the Steel Watch Foundry can be tricky, as it is heavily guarded by powerful enemies, so here are a few ways to carefully infiltrate this area without raising alarm or inciting violence.

How to get Inside the Steel Watch Foundry in BG3

Once you reach the Steel Watch Foundry, you'll notice the automated guards patrolling the area. There are two methods to get inside, the first of which is to straight up enter through the main doors by casting spells like Darkness or Fog to block the vision for the enemies—this will most likely incite conflict, forcing you to engage in combat before getting inside the Foundry.

The other method involves sneaking in through the vents and opening the main gate for the rest of your party. (Check the vent's location on the image above to see this alternative entry point.) To go in via a vent, you need to shapeshift into gaseos form (works best if you have a Wizard in your party). Once you've done that and are through the vents, open the main gate from the inside.

When you get inside the Foundry, a cutscene ensues in which Black Gauntlet Tamia Holtz is interrogating a Gondian smith. Once inside, find Gondian Zanner Toobin, as this NPC can destroy the Steel Watch Foundry.

Where to Find Zanner Toobin in the Steel Watch Foundry in BG3

Zanner Toobin is the Gondian worker inside the Steel Watch Foundry, and is key to bringing down the automatons—find him inside the Security Office (X:-327, Y:-153) of the Foundry. (Check the image above too see the precise location of the Security Office.) You can interact with Black Gauntlet Tamia Holtz, but I recommend using an Invisibility potion/spell to sneak past them and go to the office directly.

The Security Office door is locked, so you'll need to lockpick to get inside. Once that's done, interact with Zanner Toobin to learn the Gondians have been been enslaved and their families imprisoned (this is tied to another quest where you need to "Save the Gondians" from the underwater prison). Convince Zanner you will free their families, and he will decide to fight alongside when the time is right.

Zanner's daughter Obelia Toobin is being held underwater in the Iron Throne prison; you must take the submersible located inside the Flymm Cargo building to reach it. (Story spoilers ahead.) Rescue all the Gondians from the prison and speak to Obelia Toobin in the submersible.

Inform Obelia her father sent you to rescue her from the prison. Once that's done, return to Zanner Toobin to inform of their safety, after which Zanner will take you to the Control Center Antechamber at the basement of the Foundry.

How to Defeat the Steel Watch Titan in BG3

Screenshot by Pro Game Guides

Inside the Control Center Antechamber you'll face the Steel Watch Titan boss, which can be ridiculously tough to beat. It can dish massive area damage attacks, so it's ideal to split up your party. Position your tanking character at a spot that forces the boss to focus on them while your other party members deal damage from the open spaces.

If you have characters with lightning and thunder abilities, use them to focus on the boss (I used a combination of Chain Lightning and Lightning Bolt to dish massive damage). The Titan tends to stick to the middle of the room, so you can use water to electrify the area.

The Steel Watch Titan enters a defensive Bulwark mode after incurring significant damage. In this phase, go for a full offensive assault to stop the boss from recovering, ensuring an easy victory. After defeating the Titan, collect the Gontr Mael Longbow (legendary) from the body, then interact with Zanner Toobin and instruct him to destroy the Steel Watch Foundry.

A cutscene ensues where the Steel Watch Foundry is blown to bits and all the automatons across the city become hunks of dead metal. At this point, Wulbren from the Ironhands will enter the scene to start a fight with the Zanner and the Gondians. You can pacify the situation by convincing Wulbren to show mercy towards the Gondians, as they were enslaved by Gortash. Inciting a fight in this scenario isn't the best option, especially if you want every character to live.
