Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3's campaign wraps up with quite the head-scratcher, with an ending leaving players baffled at the conclusion (myself included). As a result, many are wondering: will there actually be MW4?
Will there be a Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4?
There is an extremely high chance of there being a Modern Warfare 4 following the events of Modern Warfare 3. Makarov, the game's main antagonist, escapes justice after brutally killing off Soap, a fan-favorite character. Since Markarov remains at large, you can absolutely expect a direct sequel that concludes the storyline.
Call of Duty games are developed and released in yearly cycles under the direction of three specific studios: Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games, and Treyarch. Infinity Ward released Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 last year, and Sledgehammer Games developed Modern Warfare 3 for this year. That leaves Treyarch for a potential follow-up to Modern Warfare 3, but this is unusual.
Treyarch is typically the Call of Duty developer who makes the Black Ops line of games for the franchise, not Modern Warfare. This leaves fans questioning what type of Call of Duty title to expect in 2024. There is a possibility a Black Ops game does come out next year, with Modern Warfare 4 slated for sometime after that, under Infinity Ward's cycle. Looking at this objectively, this would make more sense than Treyarch making the sequel. Regardless, there will eventually be a Modern Warfare 4. The real question is when.
