Another method of upgrading your characters is to learn new skills at Hero Shrines. These can be found while traveling on your Stagecoach, so planning your route to hit these is a good idea early on. Some of the chapters in The Shrines require you to fight through scenes with the character you've chosen.

Once learned, players may swap what skills their character is equipped with to change their options during combat. Only five skills can be equipped at once, so to equip one, you'll have to unequip one first. These new skills are kept for future runs, allowing the player to choose skills that synergize with each other and the rest of the team.

Before starting an Expedition, you can upgrade characters by going to The Living City. This allows you to use your Candles of Hope to upgrade each character, getting HP and even new Paths that change how they play. After each run, you'll accumulate a lot of candles that can be used to unlock more Trinkets to appear as well, so choose what you want to spend them on wisely!
