If you're somebody who played a lot of Diablo 3 in the past, then you're someone who knows how important Forgotten Souls are. Here's how to get them in Diablo 4.
Where to get Forgotten Soul in Diablo 4
Forgotten Souls are a type of material that will have a chance to drop form Helltide events in World Tier 3. This tier is unlocked after you hit level 50 and finish the story campaign, so you'll have to do all that if you haven't already.

The Helltide events will be marked on the map by big red outlines, so they are very hard to miss when they are active. They occur at random and will be active for about an hour when they start up. This means you have plenty of time to make your way to one when you see it, and doing so gives you the opportunity to get the Forgotten Soul drops. Unfortunately, the drop rate does seem to be very rare, so if you're in need of many souls, it will take quite a while to build up your supply. Of course, you could be one of the lucky ones who gets several drops, but that hasn't been the case for many players so far.
While obtaining Forgotten Souls won't typically be on your radar at all while progressing through the story, you'll quickly discover they are one of the most important currencies in the game at launch. They will be something you'll be spending a lot of time farming for, and seeing one drop will be just a nice as obtaining a new Legendary item.
What does Forgotten Soul do in Diablo 4?
Like its Diablo 3 counterpart, the Forgotten Soul is an item that's used to upgrade Legendary gear. You'll probably come across some legenadaries throughout your leveling experience, but they aren't necessarily worth upgrading a whole lot because they'll get replaced pretty quickly. Once your endgame build starts falling into place, that's when you need the souls for upgrading.
In Diablo 3, you could get these rare materials by breaking down Legendary items at the blacksmith, but that's not case in Diablo 4 so far. With the way Blizzard has been tweaking and changing D4 since launch, there's a chance this won't always be like this. As it stands right now, hoarding Legendaries to break down won't make all that much of a difference because you won't get extra souls out of it.
