What was once Dragon Age: Dreadwolf finally has a substantial update from BioWare. The fourth Dragon Age game in the series is coming with a fresh name - Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Thankfully, BioWare has covered why they changed the name. In their blog, they wrote, "...we changed the name as the original title didn’t show just how strongly we feel about our new heroes, their stories and how you’ll need to bring them together to save all of Thedas."
After a decade of waiting, it looks like we are closer than ever to Dragon Age 4. BioWare promises character customization so that you can make your own unique hero, epic locales and threats, and a brand-new standalone story: "Each game [also] introduces a new lead hero – The Warden, Hawke, The Inquisitor – that you can call your own. You can expect all that, and more, with the new game."
They seem to be very focused on meeting the expectations of their fans by bringing in elements from past Dragon Age games, writing, "At BioWare, we create worlds of adventure, conflict and companionship, where you’re at the center of it all. As fans of our franchise know, every Dragon Age game has delivered a new standalone story."
As a long-time Dragon Age player, I am hoping with all my heart to see Dorian and Bull in their elder years, at the very least. Their lives after the events of Inquisition were proudly displayed in the epilogue of the game, and even a passing mention of their characters is a necessary part of Dragon Age: The Veilguard to me.
What to expect for Dragon Age: The Veilguard
It's been 10 years since the last series entry—a long wait for every Inquisitor who watched the egg (Solas) betray them. So, what's next?
BioWare has invited fans to join them on their Dragon Age YouTube channel on June 11 at 8:00am PT to witness more than 15 minutes of gameplay from the opening scenes of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
During this gameplay, we may witness any of the new seven companions that BioWare has alluded to. As always, our choices as players can affect our relationships with our companions, and may even affect their lives. I am immediately taken back to that core decision to let the Chargers die or retreat in Dragon Age: Inquisition. I stand by what I have always said to friends who played the game: If you let the Chargers die, I have no empathy for what happens to you in the game.
BioWare said in their blog that, "Naturally, the Dread Wolf still has an important part in this tale, but you and your companions – not your enemies – are the heart of this new experience."
It's clear that the Dread Wolf will be a prominent part of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. But after #The DreadWolfRises was announced at The Game Awards in December 2018, and a further video was released with the Dreadwolf title to celebrate Dragon Age Day in 2023, it comes as a surprise that the team at BioWare decided to change the game's name. Either way, I'll be on the edge of my seat on June 11, and I'm sure you will, too.
