Ember Knights is a Roguelite, which means that some Rogue features will be in the game, but others will not. Limited lives are one of them, but it seems this game will take a page from The Binding of Isaac.
According to a Developer Q and A with Tiny Titan Studios and Asmodee Digital, Ember Knights gives players only one life before they hit a game over. Similarly, the demo offers only one life, but based on the coin and spell system, you will most likely be able to upgrade your character. During runs, the coins don't do anything. Later on, the developers said you will unlock spells.
Is there a permanent Game Over in Ember Knights?
Similar to The Binding of Isaac, you don't get to keep your progress in the levels or rooms, but you can improve based on what you have spent or done. Since there are more types of weapons and spells than what is shown in the demo, we imagine there will be some sort of purchase screen in between runs.
The developers have not talked about game overs being permanent, so do not worry about completely losing any progress. You won't lose your coins or things like that based on any run—you only lose progress in the levels.
