Genshin Impact Shadow of the Ancients Event Guide

More clues to technology from ancient civilizations.

The curious fog around Tsurumi Island has attracted the minds of Sumeru's Academia, and its eager researchers will do what they can to obtain invaluable information on the island. Help out one such researcher in Shadow of the Ancients, an event that will run from Nov. 5, 2021 to Nov. 15, 2021.

Players Adventure Rank 30 or above who have completed the Inazuma Archon Quest, The Immovable God and the Eternal Euthymia, can access this event.

Important Note: While not a prerequisite, access to Tsurumi Island is required to participate in this event. Phase 1 can be completed by sailing close to the restricted area from the Tsurumi Island Statue of The Seven toward the south of Wakukau Shoal. However, larger access to the rest of Tsurumi may be required in later Phases of the event.

Journey to Tsurumi

Once you've completed the prerequisites, you'll receive an Event Quest called Journey to Tsurumi. Speak with Katheryne in Inazuma City, who has a Commission from a Sumeru Academia researcher to investigate Tsurumi Island. Another Adventurer took it on and forfeited—and Katheryne could think of no one else but the ever-reliable Traveler to get the job done.

Follow the quest marker to the south of Wakukau Shoal in Tsurumi Island. There, you'll find a Ruin Grader. Defeat it—only to find out that it can revive. Don't try attacking the Ruin Grader again as it will only keep reviving. Instead, report back to Katheryne.

After, head to Ritou to meet Mr. Hosseini, the researcher who had put up this Commission. He hypothesizes that the Ruin Grader may have some kind of built-in self-repair module. It may be possible to cut the power flowing into the Ruin Grader by disrupting the flow of ley line energies using Pursina's Spikes. One problem: they're broken.

He strikes a deal to repair the Pursina's Spikes with certain components, which you can find using a device that he'll give to you called Ayesha's Chaos Prospector.

Phase 1: Investigative Surveys

Head to the Event page and click on a Survey Site to begin conducting Investigative Surveys. Starting one will cause an icon of a core to appear in your World Map, indicating the Survey location. In this Phase, you need to equip Ayesha's Chaos Prospector.

Hit the Gadget button to place one beacon within the highlighted area of the map. The beacon will release a light, indicating the direction of your search.

In the image above, the beacon's light is pointing left, which means that you should go left and place another beacon. Likewise, it will indicate the direction in which you should go.

When you place the beacon in the right location, a glow will appear on the ground, and a Check interaction will appear. Interacting will result in one of these three:

  • An Exquisite Chest will appear
  • Monsters will spawn
  • A red Ley Line Monolith will appear

You need to find the right location four times per Survey Site, which means you'll encounter all three of the above outcomes. The fourth time will merit you a General Purpose Directional Conduction Component. After obtaining this item, the Survey Site investigation will complete, and you can move on to the next location.

Phase 2: Data Sampling

Head back to Ritou to speak with Hosseini, who takes the Components from you. However, as the Pursina's Spikes require careful repair, he asks you to do a trial run—the Data Sampling phase of this event.

Open the Event Details and select Data Sampling. Like before, clicking on one location will prompt a Core icon to appear in your World Map, indicating the location of the task.

Upon arriving at each location, you'll find three Pursina's Spikes and a Challenge in the middle. Interact with the Challenge to begin.

First, charge all three Pursina's Spikes with an Electro Attack. After some time, monsters will appear. They'll attack the Spikes and force their HP gauges to drop, which will cause you to fail the Challenge—so you need to defeat the enemies fast.

As the Pursina's Spikes charge up, the charging gauges will start to empty. Simply recharge with an Electro Attack to get a 100 percent charge on the Spikes and complete the Challenge.

After completing all four Challenges, click on the Core on the bottom left of the Data Sampling page to access two additional Special Sampling Points for extra rewards.

Phase 3: Live Testing

Speak with Hosseini in Ritou. Thanks to your Data Sampling efforts, the Pursina's Spikes have been completed and are ready to test against the Anomalous Model Ruin Grader.

Head to the area marked by the quest marker in Tsurumi Island and use Ayesha's Chaos Prospector to survey the area and place the Pursina's Spikes. The mechanic is the same as the Investigative Surveys. Once all three Pursina's Spikes have been placed, head back to Ritou and speak with Hosseini, who will give you the go signal to challenge the Ruin Grader.

Go back to Tsurumi Island, now marked with a Ruin Grader icon in the World Map. The clearing will transform into the Event Challenge, which you can complete over and over again to obtain all the rewards within the Event period.

Complete the Challenge by fully charging all three Pursina's Spikes and defeating the Anomalous Model Ruin Grader. Like the Data Sampling Phase, there's a small window at the start of the Challenge for you to begin charging the three Spikes with Electro Attacks.

Once two Pursina's Spikes are charging, the Ruin Grader will gain an Attack bonus. When three are charging, it likewise gains a Defense bonus.

The Ruin Grader will target the Pursina's Spikes—take the opportunity to attack its vulnerable spots with Electro or Hydro, which are the cores on its legs and head. At one point, the Ruin Grader will begin recharging, soaking up the Electro in the Pursina's Spikes and prompting other monsters to appear.

Defeat the monsters to keep the Spikes' HP gauges high, and don't forget to recharge them again with Electro to help them charge up faster. Complete the process until the Ruin Grader is defeated and the Pursina's Spikes are completely charged, ending the Challenge.
