Genshin Impact: Where to find Chaos Device Farm Locations and Ruin Guards/Hunters

A guide on where to find Ruin bosses in the game, and what the Chaos materials do in Genshin Impact.
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Materials are vital to acquire in Genshin Impact, and the Chaos Device is one of them in the open-world action RPG. However, bosses known as Ruin Guard and Ruin Hunters need to be killed to get this loot! It's advisable to pick up everything you see, as you never know when it might come in handy. A newly unlocked 5 Star character may need it for their character Ascension. Luckily, the Chaos Device is not needed for ascending characters, but alas, it's beneficial for its use within the field of Alchemy and Weapon Ascensions. For those looking for where to find Chaos devices, you're in luck, as we'll tell you what they do, and where to find those giant Ruin Guards/Hunters that drop them!

Where to find Ruin Guards

Once you acquire the Adventurer's Handbook, you can find these bosses' locations as easy as pie. All you have to do is go to the bosses tab in the Adventurer's Handbook; now, this part will differ depending on which boss you are trying to kill. Ruin Guards are in the Mondstadt region.

Once on the Bosses tab of the Handbook, choose the region you want, and then scroll down the list until you come to Ruin Guard. Then on the bottom right-hand corner of the page, click Navigate, and on the map, it will show you where to find a Ruin Guard. What's best about this is, even after you kill the one that's being targeted, if you repeat the process, it'll show you another Ruin Guards location. Rinse and repeat.

Where to find Ruin Hunter

Ruin Hunters are located in the Liyue region. However, both ruin bosses drop the same stuff. It just allows you to kill more of them. Do the same process as the Ruin Guard, navigate to the Liyue region by accessing the dropdown menu at the top of the page, and find the Ruin Hunter in the list. Hit Navigate, and that's it!

What's even better about using the Adventurer's Handbook is that it shows you the level of the boss you want to kill. While hunting for a certain level Ruin Guard/Hunter, you'll know that it's worth it to kill. When all Ruin Guards have been eradicated, move on to the Liyue region and do the same process with the Ruin Hunters!

You can randomly find Ruin Guards/Hunters on your travels protecting chests and the like, but using the Adventurer's Handbook is the easiest method by far to find them.

Chaos Device, Chaos Circuit, Chaos Core

The main purpose of the Chaos Device is for Weapon Ascensions, and boy, there is a lot of them. When you enhance a weapon to level 20, the weapon can be Ascended using specific materials. Then every 20 levels, another Ascension can take place. Fortunately, completely different materials are not needed for every Ascension level. Instead, you need the higher rank of the base material or more of it.

Let us give you an example using the Chaos Device, the 5 Star Amos's Bow. For the first 2 Ascension levels require Chaos Devices; however, the next 2 levels need Chaos Circuits, and the 2 after that need Chaos Core. It's the same material but a higher rank each time. There are two ways to acquire the next level of items.

The first way is to acquire a lot of the base material, the Chaos Device, then use Alchemy to change it into the next rank of material.

  • Chaos Circuit: You need 3 x Chaos Device to turn into 1 Chaos Circuit.
  • Chaos Core: You need 3 x Chaos Circuit to turn into 1 Chaos Core.

For the 5 Star Amos' Bow:

  • 1st Ascension: 5 x Chaos Devices
  • 2nd Ascension: 18 x Chaos Devices
  • 3rd Ascension: 9 x Chaos Circuits
  • 4th Ascension: 18 x Chaos Devices
  • 5th Ascension: 14 X Chaos Core

The Alchemy method would take an awful lot of time to farm the lower materials needed.

The second method is by leveling up your Adventure Rank passed Rank 20. After Rank 20, every 5 ranks increases the World Level by 1. When the World Level increases, the difficulty increases, Elite Bosses, World Bosses, and even normal enemies will have a higher level and be harder to kill. This also means that higher-ranking materials will drop more often. The list below will show you what level Ruin Guards/Hunters need to be to drop the materials you need:

  • Ruin Guards/Hunters below Lvl 40: Chaos Device
  • Ruin Guards/Hunters Lvl 40+: Chaos Circuit
  • Ruin Guards/Hunters Lvl 60+: Chaos Core

As we said above, when a certain World Level is achieved, the enemies' levels increase, and by using the Adventurer's Handbook to locate these bosses, you can also see what level they are.

12 Weapons currently use the Chaos materials in their Weapon Ascension. Here is the list of those weapons:

  • 5 Star: Amos' Bow
  • 5 Star: Lost Prayer to the Sacred Winds
  • 5 Star: Skyward Spine
  • 5 Star: Wolf's Gravestone
  • 4 Star: Favonius Greatsword
  • 4 Star: Favonius Lance
  • 4 Star: Favonius Warbow
  • 4 Star: Sacrificial Fragments
  • 4 Star: Sacrificial Sword
  • 3 Star: Otherworldly Story
  • 3 Star: Recurve Bow
  • 3 Star: Traveler's Handy Sword
