Combat is a core feature in the DC universe. And Gotham Knights uses aspects from the Arkham series to have a fluid combat system. However, due to a default option, you can find yourself unable to fight during combat. So this question is this, why do I stop attacking mid-fight in Gotham Knights?
Why am I unable to attack in the middle of a fight in Gotham Knights?
You stop attacking mid-fight in Gotham Knights with only the ability to move because the Momentum Ability menu is open. To use your Momentum Ability, you must tap R1/RB for controller and Z on PC. This will open up and enlarge the ability menu in the bottom right of the screen, allowing you to press/hold a face/number button to use an ability.
However, this locks all other aspects of combat when this menu is open, and it's very easy not to realize it's open when being attacked by several enemies at once. For example, if you go to use a Momentum Ability, but the Momentum gauge isn't full yet, the ability won't happen, but the window will still open, and you'll be locked to it. To regain functionality, you need to close the Momentum Ability window.

The Momentum Ability menu needing to be tapped is the default setting in Gotham Knights. To make combat feel less clunky and to avoid locking yourself out of combat, we recommend changing this setting in the Accessibility Options.
To do this, open up Settings from the pause screen. Navigate to the Accessibility tab, and change Momentum Ability Widget to Hold instead of Tap. Doing this will save you a lot of headaches.
