Hogwarts Legacy has all the charm and magical qualities that Harry Potter fans love, such as flying on brooms, creating potions, and even caring for magical beasts. The world and story have special bits, connections, and easter eggs that tie it into the Harry Potter series, but the game takes place years before Harry Potter's birth. We put together a timeline to reveal the order of the franchise and how they all correlate to each other.
When does Hogwarts Legacy take place?
As explained by the Hogwarts Legacy developers, the setting of the experience is years before the Harry Potter is supposed to take place, in the 1800s. This is around the Victorian Era, although it is believed to be closer to the late 1800s, about 100 years before Harry is born and even before Dumbledore and Voldemort, which explains why we don't see any recognizable characters. However, we get to meet some of the ancestors of the Weasley family, such as Professor Weasley.
With the setting taking place years and years before Harry Potter, this could quickly write off any changes we see in the environment, staff for the school, and rule changes. However, some locations are still pleasantly close to the descriptions used in the books and what we can see in the movies, perhaps just a little less worn.
Hogwarts Legacy is also set before the time of the Fantastic Beast series, although their timelines are a bit closer together, which is why their aesthetics and backgrounds look more similar. We see a slight correlation between the two as players can care for pets in their own Vivarium, just like Newt does.
