Want to know how to fish in Hytale? As any survival-genre fan will tell you, no survival-crafting experience feels complete without some good old-fashioned fishing. It’s a staple of the genre and an expected feature in any modern sandbox game. In this Hytale fishing guide, you’ll learn how to catch fish, use fish traps and bait, and everything else you need to know about fishing.
Can You Fish in Hytale?
Before diving into this guide, there’s one important question to answer: Does Hytale actually have a fishing system in Early Access? The short answer is: sort of. As the developers explained during their first FAQ session in December 2025, a full fishing system hasn’t been implemented yet. According to them, they’re "still working on an interesting design for it."
Does that mean you can not catch fish in Hytale? On the contrary, you can already fish in Early Access, and there are actually several ways to catch a wish right now. Read on to learn about all of them.
Use Weapons in the Shallows
It’s a rather unconventional method, but hey - it works! During our experimentation with Hytale on the first day, we discovered that you can simply kill fish by attacking them with your weapons, as long as you’re standing in shallow water where combat is possible. Fish often swim close to shore in shallow rivers and streams, making them easy targets. Any fish killed this way will drop 1x Fish Meat, which you can cook and eat.

Use a Fish Trap and Fish Bait
A more traditional way to catch fish in Hytale (and likely the intended Early Access method) is by using Fish Traps and Fish Bait. Both items can be crafted at the Farmer’s Workbench. Here’s how to do it step by step:
- From Pocket Crafting, create a basic Workbench.
- Open the Crafting tab and locate the Farmer’s Workbench. Craft it.
- Upgrade the Farmer’s Workbench to Tier 2 (Requires x50 Essence of Life, x5 Wheat, x5 Lettuce, and x5 Softwood Trunks).
- From the Farming tab in the Tier 2 Farmer’s Workbench, select Fish Trap or Fish Bait to craft them.
- Place a Fish Trap in a quick slot, equip it using the corresponding number key, and right-click to place it in any body of water.
- Check the trap periodically to see if it has caught any fish.
- If there's a catch, press F to harvest the Fish Trap.

Important Note: Fish Traps work without bait, but adding bait increases your chances of catching higher-rarity fish. Unlike the first method (beating them with weapons, which only yields Fish Meat) Fish Traps reward you with whole fish that can be used at the Chef’s Stove.
How to Use Fish In Hytale
Once you catch a fish of any variety, you can place it in the Chef’s Stove to convert it into Raw Fish. The amount you receive depends on the fish’s rarity, ranging from 1x Raw Fish for Common Fish up to 16x Raw Fish for Legendary Fish. You can then use Raw Fish in cooking recipes or eat it as is.
