During the 20th Anniversary event for the series, Square Enix officially revealed Kingdom Hearts 4 among several other Kingdom Hearts-related projects in a trailer. The announcement of a fourth entry in the series, relatively quick on the heels of the last entry, has whipped the community into a frenzy.
Several sources close to the project and other sites are reporting that Kingdom Hearts 4 is currently being developed in Unreal Engine 4, but will be ported to Unreal Engine 5. However, nothing official has come from Square Enix at this time. Kingdom Hearts 3 was developed in Unreal Engine 4 and Unreal Engine 5 was released on April 5, 2022, after first being revealed in May of 2020.

Hopefully, the development team's familiarity with Unreal Engine will keep the game from being delayed like its predecessor was. Kingdom Hearts 3 was stuck in development hell for years and the decision to use Unreal Engine 4 was made over a year into development. But with the rumors of porting to Unreal Engine 5 being relatively simple, many fans are hopeful.
