Best Companions in The Legend of Zelda Games, Ranked

Link has had some good friends.

The Legend of Zelda is one of the most iconic and well-known series in gaming. This Nintendo franchise centers around Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf, who represent the three aspects of the Triforce. However, some unsung heroes appear throughout the series, becoming Link's companions as he embarks on each adventure. With numerous companions in The Legend of Zelda, we've listed and ranked some of our favorites below.

6. Champions of Hyrule

The Champions of Hyrule were Link's greatest companions in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. They were Mipha, Urbosa, Revali, and Daruk, representing Hyrule's great races. The four died before the events of Breath of the Wild but left behind their ancestors and gave Link the ability to use their unique skills. While their support isn't exactly that of companionship, they were instrumental in helping Link control the Divine Beasts and defeat Ganon.

Are the Champions in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom?

We have official confirmation that the Champions' ancestors appear in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This includes Sidon, Riju, Yunobo, and Teba. We see the four fighting alongside Link and helping more than in Breath of the Wild. We also have glimpses of the Champions' powers, specifically with Riju using Urbosa's lightning.

5. King of the Red Lions

The King of the Red Lions is Link's companion and ship in The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. He is Link's traveling companion and the primary way to get across the ocean. The King of the Red Lions appears as a normal talking boat, but players soon discover this isn't the full story. Without going into spoilers, The King of the Red Lions is integral to Hyrule's history.

Is The King of the Red Lions in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom?

This is highly unlikely. Tears of the Kingdom does not focus on water as much as Wind Waker, and even then, any boat Link uses is a simple raft or fused together. Additionally, the above spoiler guarantees that this character will not appear. So fans of this companion from Wind Waker will have to replay that title if they want more King of the Red Lions.

4. Fi

Fi is Link's companion in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Fi immediately became a nuisance to Zelda fans, myself included, as she constantly interrupted the story and flow with needless info dumps. This was fixed slightly in the remake of Skyward Sword. Despite this, Fi's story develops throughout the game and expands her character as she becomes more central to Link's success.

Is Fi in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom?

Many fans may wonder if Fi will reappear in Tears of the Kingdom because of the prominence of the sky islands. There has been no confirmation that Fi appears, but it is possible. We see the Master Sword undergo damage in the game, and while Fi is the spirit of the Goddess Sword, Link may forge this weapon back into the Master Sword and use Fi to do so.

3. Navi

Navi is a fairy and Link's companion in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. She is responsible for the iconic "Hey, listen!" and while many fans find her annoying, I think she is delightful. Navi begins Link's journey, waking him under the orders of the Deku Tree and staying with him throughout the game. She also makes a cameo in Majora's Mask, making her one of the few recurring companions.

Is Navi in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom?

It is highly unlikely that Navi appears in Tears of the Kingdom. She served the Hero of Time version of Link, and the Link in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom is a different incarnation. While we would love to see Navi return, I'm afraid we Zelda fans will have to dust off a different Nintendo console to see Navi again.

2. Epona

Calling Epona a companion may be a stretch, but I fully believe she deserves this title and a spot of on this list. Epona is Link's horse throughout various Zelda titles and faithfully serves him. Epona is the most iconic horse in the series as well, and ever since I was a child she has held a special place in my heart.

Is Epona in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom?

While not officially confirmed, it is almost guaranteed Epona is in Tears of the Kingdom. Nintendo has not said this outright, but we clearly see a horse that looks just like Epona. Epona could only be gained by scanning an amiibo in Breath of the Wild, but hopefully, she can be found naturally in the sequel.

1. Midna

Midna is by far the best companion in The Legend of Zelda series, narrowly beating Epona for me. Midna is Link's companion in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and hails from the Twilight Realm. Her true form was taken from her by Zant, and Link helps her regain this as she helps him regain his human form. Midna serves not only as a companion but also as a source of vital information and as an ally in combat.

Is Midna in The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom?

It is unlikely that Midna will appear in Tears of the Kingdom, but it is not impossible. There are some Twilight Princess-looking designs throughout the game, and some of the sounds come across as very Twilight Realm. That said, we have not seen any direct evidence that Minda or the Twilight people will be in the game. Midna would certainly be a welcome addition, and I'd love to see her story continued.
