The release of the October 25 Minecraft snapshot has brought several exciting new beta features to players, from new blocks to a batty makeover!
The 1.20 Update had already given Copper new life, snapshot 23W43A takes it even further with five new decorative and functional Copper Blocks. It does the same for Tuff and Bats, plus a few extra technical updates and bug fixes.
Bat Remodel
Just in time for Halloween, this snapshot tests out a retextured Bat model, complete with new animations. The new model has much larger ears as well as a larger nose, purple undertones in their face, and bigger eyes.
New Copper Blocks
Five new Copper Blocks have been added—Chiseled Copper, Copper Grates, Copper Bulbs, Copper Doors, and Copper Trapdoors.
Each block comes in the form of regular copper and all of its oxidation states. They can be waxed like the currently available copper blocks as well.
Chiseled Copper
Chiseled Copper is a decorative block that can be crafted in a Stonecutter using two Cut Copper Slabs.
Copper Grates
Copper Grates are transparent, decorative blocks that light can pass through. Mobs cannot suffocate inside of them and hostile mobs are unable to spawn on top of them. Additionally, they are unable to conduct redstone. Copper Grates can be crafted with four Copper Blocks.
Copper Bulbs
Copper Bulbs are a new light source block reliant on redstone energy. Using redstone to power the bulb will turn it on with a red light in the center of the block. Removing the redstone power source will remove the red light, but the bulb will stay lit. The only way to turn the lamp off is to use a redstone power source on it again.
Despite their reliance on redstone, Copper Bulbs do not conduct redstone energy. Additionally, their light emissions depend entirely on their oxidation levels:
- Copper Bulb: Level 15 light source
- Exposed Copper Bulb: Level 12 light source
- Weathered Copper Bulb: Level 8 light source
- Oxidized Copper Bulb: Level 4 light source
Copper Bulbs can be crafted in sets of four with three Copper Blocks, one blaze rod, and one redstone dust.
Copper Doors and Trapdoors
Copper Doors and Trapdoors work exactly like their wooden counterparts. They can be opened and closed freely by hand and through the use of redstone. Each is crafted using six Copper Blocks, producing either two Copper Trapdoors or three regular Copper Doors.

New Tuff Blocks
Tuff blocks have gotten some well-deserved TLC in this snapshot, putting it on the same playing field as underground blocks like Diorite and Andesite. Tuff now has Polished Tuff and Tuff Brick variations, with all three versions having Slab, Stair, and Wall variants. There are also Chiseled Tuff and Chiseled Tuff Brick blocks. All of these can be crafted using the Stonecutter.
Other Changes
- After throwing End Pearls, a teleportation sound is made upon hitting the ground
- Tweaks to the Telemetry Data Collection screen
- The new Tick command was added to help Minecraft admins with tasks like debugging
- A few changes were made to Jigsaw Blocks' selection and placement priorities
- Eighteen bugs were fixed within the snapshot, ranging from allowing realm configuration before creation to adjusting spelling errors in file names
