Nightingale's skill system relies on a Gear Score, which is the level of your equipment. Aside from initial character customization, there's no classic progression through levels that relies on experience points and skills. Your level in the game depends on the quality of your weapons, tools, clothes, and equipment.

Each piece of your equipment has its own Gear Score, which is a measure of quality. Starting items have a single-digit Gear Score, and you cannot do a lot with them aside from essential harvesting. Increasing your Gear Score will make your character stronger, but it will also unlock new upgrade options.

How to increase your Gear Score

Your character's Gear Score is calculated as the average Gear Score of all of your equipment. That includes your weapon, clothes, tools, and basically everything. How to upgrade your gear in Nightingale

Using the workbenches, you can create better resources and build better equipment, which will increase your Gear Score. The items of the Simple level have a 20 Gear Score, which is a significant improvement compared with starting levels.

Some of the workbenches (for example, the Simple Sewing Bench) need recipes. You can acquire recipes by buying them from traders for Essence or by progressing through the story. Recipes are very helpful for increasing your Gear Score because they allow access to better equipment, clothes, and inventory.
