If you find Octopath Traveler 2 difficult at times, trust us, you’re not alone. It sometimes even feels like the recommended level for some areas is completely wrong. We’ve certainly found a couple of locations that feel too hard for its recommended level (looking at you, Unfinished Tunnel) and some that are far too easy. This guide aims to help you make sense of Octopath Traveler 2’s difficulty.
Can you change Octopath Traveler 2's difficulty?
First off, we want to start this guide by saying that no, you cannot change the difficulty of the game. If you want to have an easier time, the only real solution is to overlevel.
How does difficulty work in Octopath Traveler 2
Difficulty doesn’t really scale in Octopath Traveler 2 unless they’re those areas between towns, and those have caps. Whatever the recommended level provided for a dungeon or story is the minimum level the game is telling you to challenge its boss with. The mobs will usually be one to two levels weaker than that number, giving you the opportunity to grind before the big fight.

However, we personally do not recommend grinding until the game’s very last boss (overleveling won’t really save you there). This is because overleveling is definitely a thing here and higher numbers are going to make battles extremely easy. Battles prove less fun if you’re smacking the enemy at 5,000 to 9,999 damage per hit.
Can I make myself weaker in case I overlevel?
As a matter of fact, you can make yourself weaker. Octopath Traveler 2 has these accessories called Rosary of Redemption, which decrease your characters’ offensive stats by a large number. You can also go into battle with no armor and a Makeshift Weapon.
