Overwatch 2 is a free-to-play team shooter with many qualities but also some annoying traits. Apart from stability issues, one of the things that bother gamers the most is the infamous phone number requirement. With the idea of stopping malicious activities, Blizzard has instituted an SMS protection system where you have to register your postpaid phone number. Without it, you essentially can't play the game.
Is Overwatch 2 Phone Number Requirement removed?
Pressured by the gaming community, Blizzard seems to have backed down from the phone number requirement. But although that may be true, the SMS requirement for Overwatch 2 still exists! How is that possible? According to the official Overwatch 2 announcement: "Any Overwatch player with a connected Battle.net account, which includes all players who have played since June 9, 2021, will not have to provide a phone number to play."
On the other hand, all new accounts and accounts not connected to Battle.net will have to provide a postpaid phone number to play the game. That can be a tall order for many players worldwide, so how to get around the phone number requirement in Overwatch 2? Here are all the possible ways!
How to avoid SMS protection in Overwatch 2
The only way to avoid the phone number requirement is to have owned and played the first Overwatch. So if you're new to the game and Battle.net platform, you'll have to register a postpaid number. The good news is that that number doesn't have to be in your name, which at least gives you some options. Another option is to be patient and wait for Blizzard to remove the phone number requirement in Overwatch 2 altogether.
