Pokémon Violet and Scarlet releases on November 18, 2022, for the Nintendo Switch. This means fans will be able to experience a new Pokémon adventure, but the age-old question remains—which version should you get?
Which should I buy, Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet?
There are a few things to consider when deciding between Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet. Here is what you should look at before deciding on which version to get.
- Box legendary
- Exclusive Pokémon
- Character differences
- Which versions your friends get

The box legendary and version exclusive Pokémon should be your primary factors when considering which version to get. These Pokémon are only able to be caught in their respective versions, and you will need to trade to get the box and exclusive Pokémon from the other version.
Some Pokémon generations include different story notes or characters. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet feature two different professors depending on which version you select. This will likely have an effect on the games' story.
Lastly, you should communicate with your friends and see what version they are getting. This makes it easier to trade for exclusive and legendary Pokémon not available in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Additionally, there is a dual pack that contains both games for those who can't decide.
Why get Pokémon Scarlet
You should get Pokémon Scarlet if you like the looks of Professor Sada and the legendary Pokémon Koraidon. Unfortunately, the exclusive Pokémon for this version are not yet known.
Why get Pokémon Violet
You should get Pokémon Violet if you like the looks of Professor Turo and the legendary Pokémon Miraidon. Unfortunately, the exclusive Pokémon for this version are not yet known.
