How good is Shaymin in Pokémon GO?

Another bulky Grass-type incoming.

It's not everyday that Pokémon GO players can get their hands on a Mythical Pokémon through special research. Now that Shaymin will be available in this mode, plenty of trainers will be after it. Just because a Mythical Pokémon is strong in the main games doesn't always mean it will perform well in Pokémon GO, though. From the looks of it, Shaymin will be a step down from its main game counterpart.

How good are Shaymin's stats in Pokémon GO?

Based on stats alone, Shaymin isn't looking to shabby for Pokémon GO standards. None of its stats are below 200, and its highest stat is its 225 Stamina. Paired with 210 Defense makes Shaymin sturdy enough to take plenty of hits. Its Attack is also 210, but this is less impressive when compared to other strong attackers like Excadrill or Mamoswine.

How good is Shaymin's moveset in Pokemon GO?

This is where things start looking bad for Shaymin. A pure Grass-type that can only use Grass moves typically doesn't perform well. Seed Flare is also much less useful in Pokemon GO. While dropping an opponents Defense by two stages is certainly nice, this only has a 40% chance of happening. It's not like Shaymin has a Serene Grace ability to raise this chance either.

Another piece of bad news for Shaymin is that it relies on Hidden Power for a Fast Move. The best that Shaymin could hope for is likely Hidden Power Grass so it can be a nice Grass-type Raid Attacker, but not even that is guaranteed. It's more likely that Shaymin gets a Hidden Power type that doesn't help at all.

What mode should players use Shaymin for in Pokémon GO?

To make good use of Shaymin, trainers should really just stick it to Raid attacking duty. In both Ultra League and Master League, Shaymin just invites every Steel and Dragon to switch in, including Giratina, Registeel, Dragonite, and plenty of other scary threats. In Raid Battles, Shaymin can at least make use of a quick charging Grass Knot.
