Pokémon Go: Can Chimchar, Monferno, and Infernape be shiny? Rates and how to get

Shiny monkeys!

Shiny Pokémon are rare versions of Pokémon in Pokémon go that have modified looks. They are called shiny because they generally add a slight sheen, making them stand out more than the normal versions.

Shiny Rates

Apart from the Pokémon that don't have shiny versions in the game, every Pokémon has a base shiny rate that tells you how often you'll see a shiny version. Chimchar is a relatively common Pokémon, so they don't have a boost to their rate. They are at the default shiny rate of 1 in 500 (about 0.20 percent). So, for every 500 Chimchar you catch, you'll probably only get one shiny version.

Monferno and Infernape are rarely seen in the wild, so you will very rarely run into a shiny version. Chances are, the only way you'll be able to get a shiny version of them is by evolving a Shiny Chimchar.

How to Get Shiny Chimchar

There is no way to force a Shiny Chimchar to appear. Instead, players must simply play the game to hope to run into one. However, players can use a few tricks to make it easier to find them.

  • Play during events that feature Chimchar. There is a Spotlight Hour featuring Chimchar on Nov. 23, 2021. Spotlight Hours don't boost the shiny rate for Pokémon, but they greatly increase their spawn rate. It's entirely possible to encounter hundreds of Chimchars or more during the Spotlight Hour, so there is a very good chance you'll see a shiny version.
  • Look for Chimchar nests. You'll find a lot more Chimchars in specific areas where they spawn. You can use the Silph Road Nest Atlas to find nests marked by other players. Nests don't increase the shiny rate, but they slightly increase the spawn rate of specific Pokémon. This makes it more likely to find a shiny Chimchar.
