Is Sifu a roguelike?

Wisdom comes with age. Or death.

Sifu is a martial arts fighting game from the developers behind Absolver. It features a stylish art style and a protagonist who is on a mission to avenge the death of their family. Along the way, the player will battle many enemies and possibly even die. The premise of Sifu might leave fans wondering if it is a roguelike.

The answer is yes—Sifu is a roguelike. Developer Sloclap has taken the roguelike feature and given an interesting twist. When the player dies, the character will age, and they will be able to spend experience points. They will then respawn where they died and use their knowledge to their advantage.

However, this comes at a cost. The more the player dies, the faster they will age. Additionally, as the player ages, they will have less health, making mistakes costly. Once the player ages too much, the magic pendant that revives them will cease to work, and the player will have to start over.

Starting over allows the player to view the mission board, which details any information they have learned. This includes information about opponents, locations of weapons, and even shortcuts. Learning from death and your mistakes is the key to succeeding in Sifu.
