How to fix low FPS issues in Sons of the Forest

Check those NVIDIA drivers too!

Low FPS in Sons of the Forest is one of the common issues with the game. There are a number of fixes that may work. The game will be patched over time and these issues can be less likely to occur, but these fixes should be able to help until the game is more optimized. The best settings for the game will largely be dependent on the hardware being used, and even with the best equipment, some stuttering might occur. These are the best options to increase FPS and performance in Sons of the Forest.

How to increase FPS in Sons of the Forest

In the Display Settings found in the Options menu, the FPS for Sons of the Forest can be adjusted. When VSync is enabled, your FPS is going to be limited. One of the easiest fixes is to simply turn off VSync to increase your FPS cap. Some PCs will actually run better with VSync on, as limiting the FPS can decrease some issues in performance. Trying both options out while turning off some of the other settings can be useful. The Max FPS option also caps your FPS limit and is useful for monitors with more than 60hz, as that is what VSync is typically used for.

Some other settings in the Graphics menu can also be adjusted to increase the performance of the game. Here are some options to consider:

  • Draw Distance
    • This can be lowered as there aren't many instances that players will be looking too far on a flat plane.
  • Anisotropic Textures
    • Like Draw Distance, there aren't many instances where players have to worry about the textures of something far away, so turning this off can help performance.
  • Motion Blur
    • This can be one of the biggest reasons for FPS drops, as Motion Blur causes an added effect on the screen when looking around or swinging. Turning it off can significantly improve the performance of the game.

Other options can be tweaked, but these are the biggest culprits when it comes to tanking FPS without sacrificing the overall quality of the game. While playing multiplayer with friends, there are some known issues with performance. Some slight tweaks should have it running just as well as in Single Player.
