Sons of the Forest is the second installment in the series, coming after the video game simply titled The Forest. Fans of the game Sons of the Forest may naturally wonder if they will need to play The Forest in order to have context for the sequel. That depends on your personal goals while playing, but it's mostly not needed.
Do you need to play The Forest before Sons of the Forest?
Of course, you can always play a sequel without playing the first of any video game franchise. This means the question becomes, "Should you play The Forest before playing Sons of the Forest?" We recommend playing The Forest first, as it will help you appreciate the changes between installments and the story/setting shift. That being said, it is not necessary to play The Forest first since both games are rather open and unstructured from an orthodox story.

What happens in the story before Sons of the Forest?
There is a lot that happens in The Forest, which takes place chronologically before Sons of the Forest. In The Forest, you play as Eric, a man who survives a plane crash on a remote island. You're tasked with helping Eric survive and avoid/fight off threats while maintaining his sanity. There aren't a lot of set quests in the game, so you focus on survival and eventually hard decisions made through human sacrifice. In The Forest, there are two different endings that can be achieved. Neither ending has any bearing on how the plot of Sons of the Forest plays out.
