Dog and Cat breeds added in Stardew Valley 1.6 Update

Along with the addition of Turtles, the developer of Stardew Valley decided to expand traditional Pets. New Dog and Cat breeds have been added to the game, with two for each species. The new animal variants include:

  • Cream Cat with blue eyes
  • Black Cat with gold eyes
  • Gray and white Dog with red bandana
  • Brown Dog with short ears and tongue out

How do you change your pet in Stardew Valley?

If you want to simply change the breed (appearance) of your existing Dog or Cat, all you need to do is go to the Wizard's basement and pay 500 coins to The Shrine of Illusions, the gold figure with an open mouth and holding a silver cup.

If you want to change the entire species of your Pet, there's no official method to doing so. You can try editing the save file, but be warned that it is a risky decision if you aren't careful. Here's how to edit your save file to change the Pet species:

  • Find your files in the path of AppData - StardewValley - Saves
  • Locate your recent save file and enter it
  • Look out for the text that says something like <NPC xsi:type="Dog"><name>PetName</name>, preferably by using Ctrl + F, which will let you search within the document
  • Change the species name to whatever you wanted instead, such as changing Dog to Turtle
  • Exit the document and restart your game

As an alternative, you can add a second pet via Marnie. It costs a lot of money and requires visiting Robin for a second Pet Bowl (which also costs you some cash), so keep that in mind.
