How to Choose Level Up Bonuses in Super Mario RPG (Table)

Get the most out of each level.

Every time you level up any character in Super Mario RPG, you get a choice between three different stats. While it might not seem like a huge deal to choose, there is a way to maximize the benefits from each level.

When the level up screen pops up on your screen, it will cycle through the level number, any new abilities, and the choice between three stats. The stats are:

  • Physical: The Physical stat brings up that character's physical attack and defense stats.
  • Magic: This raises both magical defense and magical attack.
  • HP: Raises the total amount of HP a character has.

While they are named differently than the original Super Mario RPG, the stats are all identical, and the same algorithm is used in both the Nintendo Switch and the SNES versions. This means that there is an easy way to get the most out of every stat.

The bonuses to stats in Super Mario RPG fluctuate depending on what level the character is now at. This means that sometimes a level will give one additional point to a stat when other levels give two or three points. Since each level has a pre-determined amount of points for each stat, you can predict the best one to choose.

For example, at Level 3, the character can choose to get +2 Attack and +1 Defense if you choose Physical, but Level 2's Physical bonus is +3 Attack and +1 Defense. While these bonuses change from level to level, they are the same between characters. So if Mario gets a +3 HP at Level 3 when choosing HP, Mallow will also have the opportunity to get +3 HP at Level 3.

As you may have noticed, the HP upgrades you might expect to be in Level 22, 25, and 28 are replaced instead by one of the two others. While these levels retain the pattern of HP being the highest possible stat upgrade, +3 HP is no longer a good stat boost at that high of a level. Mario or the other playable characters will have so much HP at this point that an additional 3 HP isn't a great choice. The addition of more Physical or more Magic will get more use at this point.
