Well, we'll show you exactly what you need to do to make him come out and play so you can earn yourself that power star and complete the level.

How to draw out the Eel

To get the eel out in Super Mario 64, you will need to go dangerously close to him and hang around without being so close that he can take a bite out of your fashionable overalls. Once you tantalize him with the possibility of a meal for long enough, it will start swimming outward and you will find the star you need attached to its tail. You need to swim quickly after it to nab the star or you will have trouble catching up to it. The eel will eventually return to its hole if you missed the star and you can start over the process again.

The best way to stay safe from the eel is to go below it. You should be able to get close enough to it while avoiding taking any damage. Once you see the eel start to slither its way out of the hole, you should start swimming towards its body so you can be close enough to it to grab the star without it getting away.
