How to Increase Carrying Weight Capacity in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered

This guide for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered covers all the available methods to increase weight carrying capacity in the game.

Encumbrance is one of the more frustrating mechanics in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, especially when trying to explore freely or gather every valuable item in sight. It’s easy to find yourself overburdened and forced to leave loot behind just to keep moving at a decent pace.

Fortunately, there are several effective ways to increase carrying capacity and this guide covers all available methods for it in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.

Before you start thinking about how much gear you want to haul around, it’s important to first understand how much weight your character can actually carry. I made the mistake early on of grabbing everything I found, only to realize I was moving at a snail's pace because I had no idea I was over the limit.

To check your current carrying capacity, open your inventory. At the bottom of the screen, you’ll spot a weight icon in the center—this is what you want to focus on. It’ll show two numbers in the format X/Y. The first number (X) tells you how much weight you’re currently carrying, while the second number (Y) represents your maximum load capacity.

If your current weight exceeds that limit, your character becomes encumbered. And when that happens, forget about running—you’ll be stuck walking slowly until you lighten your load

Some classes, like Knight, Crusader, Barbarian, Warrior, Archer, and Battlemage have a higher strength stat, and will allow you to carry more weight from the start of the game. But, if you are going with the classes like Stealth, you will need to look at other options for increasing the weight carrying capacity. That is why we have listed three methods to increase weight in the game here below:

Increasing Strength Stat

If you go with one of the Strength-heavy options, you'll naturally be able to carry more items right from the start. However, if you choose a different class that doesn't emphasize Strength, you'll need to improve that stat manually to boost your carrying capacity.

To level up your stats, open the Character screen, which is located near your inventory menu. You’ll see a golden bar at the bottom of the screen—this bar fills up as you increase your major skills. Once it’s full, find a bed where you’re allowed to sleep, and rest for at least one in-game hour.

After sleeping, the game will notify you that you can level up. That’s your chance to allocate points to your stats. If you're trying to increase how much weight you can carry, be sure to invest in the Strength stat using your earned Virtues.

Using Console Commands

PC players are in for a real treat with The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, especially when it comes to bypassing some of the game’s more frustrating mechanics—like encumbrance. If you’ve also gotten tired of constantly dropping valuable loot just to move around, there’s a simple way to get around that using a console command.

To start, press the tilde key (~) on your keyboard, which you’ll find just below the Escape key. This opens the in-game console where you can enter cheats. To remove the weight limit, type in the following:

  • player.forceav encumbrance -X

Replace the “X” with any number you choose—it can be as high as you like such as 9999.

Once you hit enter, the restriction on how much your character can carry will be lifted and replaced with the number you write in the code. This allows you to hoard loot to your heart’s content without ever worrying about being slowed down again.

Note: Before you use the console commands, there’s one key thing you need to keep in mind—activating any console command will immediately disable achievements for your current playthrough.

This restriction only applies to the save file you’re using when the command is entered. If you want to go back to earning achievements later, just load up a clean save or start a new game without using any cheats.

Use Mods to Carry Inifite Items

Technically, using a mod to give yourself unlimited carrying capacity is still considered a form of cheating—just like using console commands. However, it’s a more convenient option for players who don’t want to mess with the in-game console.

One popular exploit is the Carry Weight Modifier by Nexus Mods. This one lets you carry as much loot as you want without worrying about leveling up your stats or managing inventory space the way the game originally intended.

With this mod installed, you can forget about dropping gear or making tough decisions about what to keep. Just install it once, and you’ll be free to loot everything in sight from the early game all the way through the final quest.

That is everything you need to know about how to carry more weight by increasing the carrying capacity in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. For more about the game, consider checking out our All Oblivion Remastered Console Commands & Cheats guide.
