Should you set Gammel free in Unicorn Overlord?

You can either let Gammel go or send him off to jail.

Gammel is a Dark Talon member that you will encounter quite early in Unicorn Overlord. This bandit has quite the sob story, and you have to option to either throw him in jail or let him go free.

Whether you feel bad for Gammel's story or simply don't buy his "lies," you have to make a decision. In this guide, I'll discuss all possible outcomes and rewards for sending Gammel to jail or setting him free.

Letting Gammel go vs putting Gammel in jail in Unicorn Overlord - All outcomes

Gammel appears in the Coquillage Town, and he is working with a group of bandits called the Dark Talon. After you catch him and defeat him in battle, he will begin to tell you the story of his ailing sister. If you choose to take him at his word, you can let him go. If you choose to jail him, he will be locked away. So you need to pick whether or not you are going to believe his story or not.

Rewards for sending Gammel to Jail:

  • Recruit Rolf
  • Recruit's Shortbow
  • Beckoning Bell
  • Cornia Militia
  • 10,000G

In the first few hours of the game, if you send Gammel off to the Night Watch to serve his time, nothing happens. You do not get to recruit Gammel, but Rolf still joins your party along with a bonus of 10,000G.

However, there is a brief cutscene showing Dark Talon bandits breaking Gammel out of jail and him promising to get vengeance on your party for not letting him go. This cutscene hints at the possibility of a rematch with Gammel later down the line if you choose to send him to jail.

Rewards for sending Gammel to Jail:

  • Recruit Rolf
  • Recruit's Shortbow
  • Beckoning Bell
  • Cornia Militia

If you choose to let Gammel go, he leaves alone, without his Dark Talon goons. He will walk out of town, look back your way, and say, "I won't forget this as long as I live." Rolf is still recruited, and you still get the rewards for successfully completing this quest.

You only miss out on the 10,000G for your War Funds, but it's not worth it, considering you can farm gold efficiently in Unicorn Overlord. It's better to recruit more powerful characters rather than mercenaries from the get-go.

We have not encountered Gammel after letting him go. However, AtlusTube uploaded a short video showcasing him in action on the player's side of the battle. This video confirms that you can recruit Gammel later in the game. He is a thief like Travis, so you can expect him to have high evasion and the valuable skill of Plunder.
