While there isn’t a simple answer to the question of what are the best Talent combos in Yaoling Mythical Journey, there are some foundational rules you should follow. The most important considerations are:

  1. What is your party lacking and can you provide it through Talents?
  2. What will help balance the individual yaoling to make them the best they can be?

It’s important to note that every yaoling can have four talents maximum. If a yaoling already has four talents (good or bad), you will have to remove one before you add another.

It’s important to remember that when you find elite yaolings with several rare Talents, they are still randomly chosen so may be useless to that yaoling. For example, a yaoling with Elemental Mastery that doesn’t do any Elemental damage is simply wasting one of its slots. So, once you've figured out the best yaolings for your party, equip them with the Talents that suit their role.

Best assassin Talent combo

Assassin units burnt bright, but rarely last the whole battle. This talent build maximizes movement but also ensures you’ll go out with a bang.

  • Explosive (rare): When you die you explode, dealing a third of your max HP as damage to nearby enemies.
  • Grand Entrance (common): Gets you straight to the opponent's back row at the beginning of the battle so that you can attack their weaker units.
  • Martyr (common): When you die, all allies get an 80 percent attack speed bonus for 6 seconds.
  • Rampage (rare): If you kill an enemy you blink behind another and get 100 percent Lifesteal for 10 seconds.

Best ranged DPS Talent combo

This ranged DPS build gives up movement speed but piles on extra attacks whenever possible, while also starting the battle with increased crit chances.

  • Firework (rare): You fire additional shots in 8 directions when attacking.
  • Rapid Fire (common): You trade in move speed for a 60 percent chance to fire bonus shots.
  • Tai Chi (common): Every 8 seconds you’ll 100 percent reflect the next attack on you.
  • Warmed Up (common): Get +100 percent to your Crit Chance for the first 6 seconds of combat.

Best tank Talent combo

Staying alive is the name of the game, so DEF increases are paramount. You’ll also be able to pull in nearby enemies while reflecting some of the damage you take in the process.

  • Extrovert (common): This ups your DEF while decreasing attack range, which you don’t need in melee much anyway.
  • Instinctive (common): If your HP drops below 50 percent, you’ll get a nice +20 to DEF.
  • Rock Solid (rare): 20 percent of all damage taken is reflected onto nearby enemies.
  • Wind Vortex (rare): You have a 15 chance to pull nearby enemies to you on each hit, doing bonus damage in the process.

Best melee DPS Talent combo

Everything here is geared toward dealing out as much damage as quickly as possible, including gaining some reflection and AOE damage.

  • Mirror Skin (rare): The first three hits on you are instead reflected onto the attacker for 100 of the damage.
  • Rainstorm (rare): After every 9 seconds you attack every nearby enemy.
  • Tyrant (legendary): Gain a 35 percent bonus to your ATK stat.
  • Warmed Up (common): For the first 6 seconds of the battle your Crit Chance is +100 percent.

Types of Talent in Yaoling Mythical Journey

There are several different types of Talent in Yaoling, which are color-coded so that you can spot them easily. Note that the Spirit Gems you find are in the same colors.

  • Dark grey: These are negative Talents (they can be removed in the usual way).
  • Blue: Standard Talents.
  • Purple: Rare Talents.
  • Yellow: Legendary Talents.
  • Pink:  SE Talents.

Pink SE talents are only found on sparkly yaolings (see above), so it is always worth capturing them when you see them, even if they’re not elite yaolings.

How to get Spirit Gems in Yaoling Mythical Journey

Spirit Gems are used to add new talents to your yaolings. They have their own section in your backpack and are color-coded in the same way Talents are (see above). Each Spirit Gem can be used to add one talent to one yaoling. The exception is Amber Teardrops, which instead remove unwanted Talents.

Spirit Gems are most commonly found in Chests but can also be mission rewards. You can sell unwanted Spirit Gems at any vendor, and you can buy a regularly updated random selection from Chu-Chu in the village once she has moved in (as part of the Home of the Yaolings mission). You’ll find her east of Fluvial Village (see above).

How to remove a talent in Yaoling Mythical Journey

First, you need to have the yaoling you want to remove a Talent from in your party and an Amber Teardrop in your inventory (this is a relatively common but specific Spirit Gem). If you do:

  1. Go to the Spirit Gem section of your inventory and right-click the Amber Teardrop.
  2. Select the party member you want to forget a Talent on the yaoling list.
  3. Right-click the Spirit Gem on the left menu.
  4. Click ‘forget’ next to the talent you want to remove.
  5. Click ‘accept’.

The talent will now be removed, allowing you to put a new one in its place!

Make sure the yaoling you want to add the talent to is in your party and has less than four Talents. Otherwise, you won’t be able to add a new Talent to it.

  1. Go to the Spirit Gem section of your inventory and right-click the one you want to add.
  2. Select the party member to whom you want to add the Talent to the yaoling list.
  3. Right-click the Spirit Gem on the left menu.
  4. You’ll see the new Talent in the yaoling’s list, with the word ‘learn;’ over it. Click ‘learn'.
  5. Click ‘accept’.
