While gear and build make a huge difference in improving your DPS in Zenless Zone Zero, it is the buffs you use that arguably are the largest factor. There are many buffs in the game, and many of them stack together, so here's everything you need to know about them.
Which Buffs stack in Zenless Zone Zero?
Before I jump into the question present above, you should know about all the different types of buffs in the game. For sake of simplicity and ease of understand, I've combined all the buffs types into two core sections.
- Passive Buffs - Identical Buffs that stack with each other and are the same, despite coming from different sources.
- Active Buffs - Identical Buffs that do not not stack with each other, most often from the same source
Passive Buffs

Passive Buffs are the most common type of buffs in Zenless Zone Zero, as they typically encompass simple stat gains that are additive with each other. These type of buffs typically come from passive sources (sources that you don't actively trigger) such as Disc Drive effects and W-engines.
These types of buffs always stack together because they are added to your character's base stats before Active buff computations take effect.
Active Buffs

Active Buffs are buffs that tend to be a bit more complicated to understand and appear on the buff bar during active gameplay. These are buffs that come typically come from a character's Active skill and/or mechanic, and identical sources of that buff are most commonly overwritten rather than stacked upon. The only exception to this is Flat ATK, as any sources of Flat ATK, whether the be Passive or Active, will stack together.
Below is a chart to help you understand which types of buffs will stack together, and which ones won't. Note, that if a buff does not actively stack, it means the stronger version of the same buff will override the additional application, instead boost its duration (not always the case).
Buff Type | Passive Stacking? | Active Stacking? |
---|---|---|
Flat ATK | Yes | Yes |
ATK% | Yes | No |
CRIT Rate | Yes | No |
CRIT DMG | Yes | No |
PEN (Identical source) | Yes | No |
PEN (Different source) | Yes | Yes |
Energy Regen | Yes | No |
As you can see, most buffs that originate come from a Passive source (Disc Drives, W-engines, sub stats), can be stacked freely without concern. However, the moment you have two characters providing Active buffs that are identical (two characters providing CRIT Rate, for example), the effects will not stack with each other.
When do Active Buffs stack together?

Now, things aren't always cut and dry. So, for clarity, I will provide an example of Active buffs that stack that might be difficult to understand under normal circumstances.
Both Rina and Burnice can provide PEN Ratio to their entire team.
- Burnice buffs PEN Ratio only when attacking enemies affected by her "Afterburn" debuff (Mindscape 02)
- Rina provides PEN Ratio passively when her Bangboo units are on the field (Core Passive)
This is a situation that where you might thing these two PEN Ratio buffs would not stack. However, they do stack together because the source of both character's PEN Ratio buffs differ.

- Burnice's PEN Ratio buff is conditional, only functional when attacking her 'Afterburn' targets.
- Rina's Pen Ratio buff is a field-wide aura buff that's passively applied when her Bangboo are present on the field.
The sources of both PEN Ratio buffs are different from each other, thus they are allowed to stack together and provide their full benefits at the same time.

Understanding how buffs work in Zenless Zone Zero can net you considerable gains, so make a mental note of this chart as you progress your account and build out your teams.
