You start off Hytale with very limited inventory space, which will fill up in minutes, considering all the items and materials that you can pick up. Since discarding items from your inventory is not always an option, the next best thing is to increase your inventory slots by crafting a backpack. This guide will tell you exactly how to unlock, craft, and upgrade a Backpack in Hytale. So, let’s dive right in!
How to Get a Backpack in Hytale

A Backpack is a craftable item that will permanently increase your inventory/storage. However, to get a Backpack in Hytale, you need to first upgrade your Workbench to Workbench Tier 2. Considering you already have a Workbench, here’s everything you’ll need to upgrade it to Workbench Tier 2:
- 30x Copper Ingot
- 20x Iron Ingot
- 20x Linen Scraps
Once you’ve unlocked Workbench Tier 2, you can now craft a Backpack. Follow the steps below to get your Backpack in Hytale:
- Open your Workbench.
- Go to the Tinkering tab and find the Unlock Backpack option.
- You’ll need the following items to craft it: 8x Iron Ingot and 16x Medium Leather.
If you have the required items, simply click on Craft to get your Backpack. Once you have it, you can further increase its storage capacity by upgrading your backpack.

Once it’s done crafting, simply equip it to your character screen, and your backpack storage space will increase.
How to Unlock Backpack Upgrade II in Hytale

If you’re a hoarder like me and pick up everything in sight, the Backpack Upgrade I won’t be enough. You’ll need to get even more space by unlocking and equipping the Backpack Upgrade II. For that, you have to collect and record 100 Memories at the Forgotten Temple statue.
When you record 100 Memories, you’ll unlock multiple crafting recipes for all Workbenches in Hytale, including the recipe to craft Backpack Upgrade II at the Workbench Tier 3.
Note: I’m halfway through the 100 Memories grind and will share the complete recipe for Backpack Upgrade II so you can collect the materials along with the Memories. If you’ve already discovered the recipe, do share the recipe in the comments section below.
Hytale FAQs
You can equip a Backpack just like you equip the torch. Pick it up from your inventory and drop it at any of the free slots on the character screen to your left.
To get Medium Leather in Hytale, you’ll need to process Medium Hides in the Tanning Rack. Get Medium Hides from mid-sized threats like the Wolf and the Tanning Rack can be crafted at the Workbench.
Linen Scraps are a common item that is used in different crafting recipes. You can get Linen Scraps from killing different enemies like the Skeleton and the Trork Guards.
Cindercloth Scraps are dropped by enemies in the volcanic layer. Descend to the volcanic layers of any underground area and look for Skeleton Fighters and Mages. Killing them will drop Cindercloth Scraps.
