Nyrelle & Diablo 4 Ending Explained

A mysterious conclusion...

Diablo 4's narrative is, arguably, the best in the series. While that isn't saying much considering the story has pretty much been secondary since the very first game, there is still enough added here that makes one curious. The finale left us off on a massive cliffhanger with some seriously interesting details that cannot be ignored by anyone who even knows a little about the lore. Regardless if you know the lore or not, there is still likely one core question on your mind upon seeing the conclusion.

Where is Nyrelle going in the ending of Diablo IV?

In a story, when given a significant cliffhanger during the conclusion, the only thing you can really do to get an understanding of what may come next is to analyze the final event for clues. In Diablo 4's case, we are treated to an extensive montage of Nyrelle leaving us and Lorath behind, along with a brief letter explaining her actions. Even more shocking is that the weakened version of Mephisto, in his signature wolf form, appears to be helping Nyrelle leave, despite her being the one to seal Mephisto in the completed soulstone.

There is a lot more to be said about the above, but the most pressing question is where is Nyrelle going. Well, we have a hint. The fact that she is crossing a massive ocean at the end, implies she is going to the other major continent in Sanctuary, the same continent where the infamous Tristram is located. Tristram is extremely important to note here because this is where Diablo really began in the first place. If Nyrelle is really seeking to put an end to the Eternal Conflict, then Tristram is likely where she is going. I'll eat my hat otherwise.

Why is Mephisto following Nyrelle?

Of the three Prime Evils, Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal, Mephisto has always been known as the intelligent one. He is the schemer, the one lurking in the shadows to get what he wants. If you rewatch the ending cutscene in Diablo 4, and the events leading up to it, Mephisto helps us, and the rest of the main cast, out a ton, despite being in a self-proclaimed weakened state. The fact that he is willingly following Nyrelle, who sealed him in the soul stone created during the campaign against his own wishes, suggests that Mephisto is secretly in control of the situation. The fact is, Nyrelle has him in the soul stone, and I think this is exactly what he intended to happen. Mephisto has a plan, we just don't know what it is... yet.

Will Nyrelle be corrupted by the soul stone?

I think this is likely. Nyrelle is practically following in the footsteps of the Dark Wanderer from Diablo 2. She has the soul stone of a Prime Evil close to her person and places great importance on it. Lorath stated that just being in proximity of a Prime Evil for too long is enough to be corrupted by it. Nyrelle never hears this explanation, so I think it is likely she will end up being a host for Mephisto at some point, or something worse.
