Should you follow the Masked Stranger or Escape in the Warehouse? - Sovereign Syndicate Chapter 1

Your first choice is undoubtedly the most important in Chapter 1, and I recommend heading into the warehouse rather than immediately following the Masked Stranger. However, I do recommend exploring Beggar's Lane first; just be careful not to get too close to the Masked Stranger. Here are the main activities you should do before heading into the warehouse.

Beggar's Lane - Sovereign Syndicate Chapter 1

  • Pick up Atticus' cane.
  • Check the newspaper to get the Investigate the Murders quest.
  • Check the liquor bottles and investigate them successfully to get the Gin Collector Quest and a Cordial Old Tom.
  • Check the Herring Basket and push through to get some coin and a spoiled herring.
  • Pick up the two Gears in the alley.
  • Check the Missing Poster to get the Missing Orphans Quest.

Aside from these, you can interact with Poe Pickett and give him the spoiled herring, but this only reduces your Hope. As far as dialogue choices and actions, complete the ones above, but I recommend focusing on skills for which you have fewer points when possible to round out your scores. Typically, negative-sounding dialogue choices reduce Atticus' Hope, while positive or confident ones increase it. With all this done, break into the warehouse to continue.

Into the Warehouse - Sovereign Syndicate Chapter 1

  • The Chariot (Major Arcana Card)
  • Sandhog Uniform
  • Prybar
  • Rope
  • Flask of Laudanum
  • Gears

Upon entering the warehouse, you are first greeted with a passed-out drunk. You can pick his pockets, leave him be, or kill him. Anything other than leaving him requires a check, while picking his pockets rewards you with some coin. Bashing his head in gets you The Chariot Major Arcana Card, but this can be gotten later in this area if you want to avoid bloodshed.

Beside the man is a coffer, which you can break open to find a Sandhog Uniform. I recommend putting it on, but you need to pass the check or it will tear and be unusable. Continue forward and ignore the sewer grate for a moment. Collect the Gear and the rope, and break open the box to get the prybar. Use the prybar to open the sewer grate for the easiest result.

Once open, reach in to find a lock you cannot open yet. However, you can reach farther in to get bit by a rat, then reach in again to get your vengeance on the rat. If you succeed, you can earn a whole one-pound banknote. Press forward, and you'll run into a bilgeman doing patrol. You can either hide and avoid him or confront him.

If you confront him, you can lie or tell him the truth, but the outcome will largely be the same. If you do not already have The Chariot Card, you can intimidate the bilgeman to get this Major Arcana Card. Continue forward, and you'll come across a Steamer Trunk. Opening the trunk will give you Jeremiah's Gin, which updates your Gin Collector quest, some coins, and cigarettes.

Press forward and speak to the automaton. You can ask about another exit or the bootleg moonshine. Select the moonshine option; the automaton reveals a barrel of moonshine that can be found behind the furnace. Head back to the stairs, and you'll spot the barrel. You can either partake heavily in the moonshine or select the dialogue choices below to complete the Cut Back On Your Drinking task and get +10 Hope.

  • Tempting, but I was thinking of cutting back.
  • I promised... so consider this the 'one less drink.' But after this, I'm good to go.

Aside from that, you can stare into the furnace for oblivion, but ultimately, you should enter the Sewers. In the Sewers, you immediately encounter a blocked passage you cannot pass through, so head across the wood planks. As you prepare to go upstairs, you'll spot a patrolman. You can speak to him at any time; he will not bar your progress or stop you.

Cutpurse and the Ladsman - Sovereign Syndicate Chapter 1

The conversation with the Pumphouse Captain has little difference in outcome, so select whichever dialogue choices you want. Before heading downstairs to the arguing pair, you can eavesdrop at the wooden barrel and even knock the barrel on the Ladsman. If you intervene and save the girl, Annika Johansson, she'll give you valuable information, update your Missing Orphans quest, and give you two Cogs.

If you fail to save Annika Johansson, Atticus will flee the encounter and remember the Ladsman from his childhood. You also have the option of wounding but sparing the Ladsman instead of killing but still saving the girl. Sparing him allows you to run into him later. After making your choice, interact with the flask to get a Flask of Laudanum.

If you have The Chariot card, you can intimidate the Engineer without issue. However, the true line of dialogue you should aim for should be the Wit option, asking about the bootleg shine in the barrels. Succeeding leads to the Engineer requesting you fetch a bottle of liquor from his trunk. If you refuse, you complete the Cut Back on Your Drinking task.

However, I recommend grabbing the McGrady's Gin from the trunk to get another point in your Gin Collector task. Return to the Engineer, John Teller, and have two drinks with him. He will provide information about the Ladsman and the crank in the pumphouse. After speaking to all the NPCs in the warehouse and sewer, it's time to face the music and speak to the Masked Stranger.

Following the Masked Stranger - Sovereign Syndicate Chapter 1

Speak to the Masked Stranger, and he will lead you to the Red Lotus. Take a moment to explore the area before heading to the bar and speaking with the Masked Stranger and the bartender.

  • Remove Sandhog Uniform in the changing area.
  • Take a bath.

You can handle the situation how you want, but ultimately the owner of the Red Lotus will appear, recognize Atticus, and give you two a private room. Complete the following before meeting the Masked Stranger:

  • Pick the Opiomaniac's pocket.
  • Sell the Cogs to Teddy.
  • Pick the Dreamer's pockets.

You find yourself in a new location. Check out the area, and most importantly, speak to Teddy Redgrave and his automaton Otto. He gives you valuable information about the world and offers you a place to sell your Gears. Be sure to sell these to help yourself later.

Speak to the Masked Stranger and choose to drink the tea or not; the outcome doesn't matter much, but you gain a large amount of Hope from drinking it. If you select the Wit options during this dialogue, you can earn the Wheel of Fortune card. Progress through the dialogue and take the Dream Dose to learn about Atticus' mother.

Atticus will find himself in a dream-like trance, remembering his youth at the orphanage. This is a fairly linear area, so progress through speaking to Sister Heloise each time you encounter her. There are a few objects you can interact with, but you only gain dialogue and background from these. You can pick up the High Priestess card by completing the checks in this sequence.

Eventually, you come to a room where you must sneak past Snyder. If you fail the check, you can intimidate or negotiate your way past him. Passing the first check puts you through the challenge and lets you rob the lockbox. You'll speak to Sister Heloise once more and be left with a cryptic message as you complete Chapter 1.
