Black Myth Wukong: Best mods & how to install them

Try out these mods!

Black Myth Wukong has broken all records and become one of the most-played games on Steam on its first day of release. Although the game has only been out for a few days, you can already find some performance-improving mods developed by the modding community; here are a few good examples.

Black Myth Wukong SPF Mod

Black Myth Wukong was launched in a polished state and the game runs pretty smoothly on most devices. However, some players have reported crashes, lags, and other issues, which is expected from a new release. The BMWK - SPF mod created by xowny has helped players gain performance and fix stuttering without degrading the visual fidelity much.

After downloading and extracting the files, put them in the b1\Content\Paks\~mods folder in the game's installation directory. To find the game files on Steam, right-click on Black Myth Wukong in the library, go to Manage, and click on Browse local files. Now, go to b1\Content\Paks. If you haven't installed any mods yet, create a new folder and name it ⁓mods (see image above). Finally, copy the pakchunk99-Mods_CustomMod_P.pak file from the BMWK - SPF mod folder and paste it into the ⁓mods folder.

High CPU Priority Mod

Another thing you can do to improve performance is to set the game's priority to high in the registry editor. Thankfully, there's a simple mod that does this for you. Download the Anti-Stutter - High CPU Priority mod from the NexusMods website. Run the Install BMW High CPU Priority.reg file to enable high CPU priority for Black Myth Wukong. If you face any issues afterward, just run the Uninstall BMW High CPU Priority.reg from the same download folder to restore the changes.

Enhanced Wukong Visuals Mod

The next mod on this list improves the visual quality by tweaking some post-processing effects like fog, depth of field, lens flare, bloom, and anisotropic filtering. Download the Enhanced Wukong Visuals mod and paste the ZZFrancisLouis_EWV_P.pak file into the b1\Content\Paks\~mods folder. For the final step, go to Steam, right-click on Black Myth Wukong, and click on Properties. Under the Launch Options, type in -fileopenlog as the startup command for this mod to function properly.

Downgraded Wukong Visuals Mod

While Enhanced Wukong Visuals enhances the visuals, the Downgraded Wukong Visuals mod can be installed to improve the game's performance "to almost 50 fps above the usual" as claimed by the mod developer FrancisLouis. The installation process is the same as the previous mod, but here you can choose from three different presets based on your preference:

  • Slightly: Gives a frame boost (around 8 FPS) by changing shadows, render distance, and LODs.
  • Considerably: Tweaks the parameters mentioned above to a higher extent and gives around 12 extra FPS.
  • Significantly: This preset is for players with a low-end PC and can give you around 50 FPS boost by downgrading the graphics significantly.

I also found the Simple Realistic mod created by Chris Rubino that appeared to me as the best filter for Black Myth Wukong. This shader improves the game's illumination, details, vibrance, and post-processing effects. Keep in mind that this mod is meant to enhance the visuals and not performance. Extract the downloaded files into the b1\Binaries\Win64\ folder (i.e., where the b1-Win64-Shipping.exe is). Play the game and use the Del key to enable or disable the shader. Furthermore, press End to bring up the Reshade UI to adjust the color saturation, light intensity, and dark level to your liking.
