All Purgatory Island challenges & how to complete in MW3 Season 6

The Haunting event has come to Modern Warfare 3, and with it, Purgatory Island. This strange new mode offering is a first for COD, offering up a sandbox experience to grind for camos and challenges. It also comes with the Purgatory Island event, meaning a host of challenges and rewards.

Reach Torment Level Two Challenge

To reach Torment Level 2, you simply have to get kills without dying in the Purgatory Island mode. Doing so will grant you increased XP gain on kills, but each level of Torment comes with a notable debuff. For example, in my play session, hitting Torment level 3 had me permanently on the radar of other players. You can watch your Torment level progress by referring to the following unique UI element.

Spend five minutes outside the safe zone challenge

This one is easier said than done, as it requires you to sit outside the protected safe areas on Purgatory Island for five whole minutes without killing any players. However, this also means you can't be killed by any players, as doing so will reset your timer. I'd suggest finding a nice quiet spot, taking the Ghost perk, and playing Solitaire for a bit.

Get 50 Mercenary Kills using the Terriball or Vehicle challenge

This one is a doozy, and to be perfectly honest, I'd suggest going for the vehicle option here. The Terriball is a unique... 'thing' that will be discussed in a later section. Running over the NPC mercenaries is your best bet. They frequently drop from helicopters, which might take a while on account of all the shooting, but you can get there within the massive 2-hour time limit of each map.

Commend 5 Operators challenge

This one is about as easy as it gets. Go to any of the safe zones on Purgatory island, wait for some players to show up, and then get close to them. You'll be prompted to interact with them to commend them, which will cost you nothing and grant them 50XP, which hopefully they'll return.

Get five Operator kills in vehicles challenge

This one is... easyish. You just need to get five player kills whilst in a vehicle, and that means either by being a passenger and shooting out, or via the tried and tested method of vehicular manslaughter.

Get three Operator kills with the Terriball challenge

This one is not so easyish. You'll need to get three Operator kills with the Terriball. In my experience, there's usually quite a few players looking to trade kills with these, and to be honest, I'd take them up on the offer. Getting these naturally is going to prove difficult. The Terriball is a unique... 'thing' that has a chance of spawning on the Purgatory Island map. They can spawn randomly, and also drop randomly from Scare Packages. In order to use these strange orbs, you'll need to either shoot, melee or run into them. Doing so will cause them to fly off and instantly kill the first Operator it hits. I have tried, I have not yet been successful.

Teleport 15 times using Portals challenge

Portals can be located on the map in a few locations, and each transport you to a random spot on the map. Handy for a quick getaway. You can locate these by looking for large red orbs when dropping in, or by looking for the egg adjacent icon on your minimap.

Pilot the Flying Shipment challenge

This one is... yeah. Don't really know how to describe this one. Shipment, as in the beloved map Shipment, will sort of mosey on over the island at a random point during the game. It is... driveable. You have to be the first one to reach it in order to do so, or wait for someone to hop out. You can also land on it when someone else is flying it and... fight on the Flying Shipment. Bizarre stuff man.

Complete all challenges... challenge

Yeah this one speaks for itself. Finishing all of the Purgatory Island challenges grants you the event completion reward, the 'Cloud Watching' camouflage.
