As you migrate deep into the ocean in Crab God, one of the most important tasks you have is understanding how all of the game's roles work, as they contribute to all aspects of your progress. Here's our handy guide to explain each role and how best to assign them to your Crablings.
How to assign roles to Crablings in Crab God and when
As soon as you start the first stage of the game, your Crablings will emerge from the Temple of the Tide, healthy and ready to work to safeguard the Crab God's heir on its journey. To do so, they need to be assigned to one of five possible roles, which include:
- Gardener - 10 Favour cost
- Scavenger - 10 Favour cost
- Worshipper - 0 Favour cost
- Builder - 35 Favour cost
- Hunter - 25 Favour cost
To assign a role to a Crabling, click on it to pull up its sub-menu, which will have either the 'Assign Role' or 'Change Role' option. From there, the Roles Menu will pop up (as seen above), displaying all five options, their basic functions, and their Favour cost. There's no limit to how many Crablings can take a specific role at any time, so you can have a few Worshippers, Scavengers, Hunters, or whatever mixture you prefer. In that regard, there's no need to stress over who gets what role.
During the daytime, you'll want to prioritize assigning Gardeners, Scavengers, and Builders, so they can safely work on producing as much Food (see our guide for upgrading Plants and Corals to Level 3) and Favour as possible. Builders can work on fortifying defenses around the Temple. When night comes, however, you'll want to switch some Crablings over to Hunter roles so that they can fend off all incoming enemies. Pick your strongest Crablings (e.g. health and attack stats) for this.
Given their limited range of responsibilities and priority for generating Favour, Worshippers should be used day and night. Try to keep at least two or three Worshippers on hand at all times, unless you absolutely need to switch them over to protect the Temple at night (specifically on harder difficulties).
Each role takes care of a specific set of tasks on the stage, so making effective use of all of them throughout your journey is vital to completing a full migration. When it comes to the higher difficulties, where day cycles and Favour consumption are more unforgiving, knowing how to strategize those roles and also how to allocate the best Traits in the game is especially important.
How each role works in Crab God & best ways to use them
As mentioned before, each role in Crab God comes with its own set of designated tasks to complete throughout each stage of the game. While some tasks are more obvious and exclusive to a specific role, there are other unspoken ones that allow all of the roles to integrate and work efficiently together. Finding that perfect balance of integration is what will make your Crabling migration all the easier.
Side note: some Supplemental Tasks require you to unlock them first via a cleansed and fulfilled Ritual Stone.
Role | Basic Tasks | Supplemental Tasks |
---|---|---|
Gardener | - Grow and Upgrade Plants & Corals | - Clear Caulerpa plants - Clear destructive green mussels |
Scavenger | - Pick up Food and store it in the Temple's stockpile | - Dig up Treasure spots |
Worshipper | - Generate Favour at the Temple - Cleanse Ritual Stones | None |
Builder | - Clear obstacles - Use hammer to find Favour in the sands - Work with Hunters to attack enemies | - Build protective Walls (unlocked via Ritual Stone) - Build Traps to damage enemies (unlocked via Ritual Stone) - Break open Clams with Hammer to acquire Favour |
Hunter | - Attack enemies which also generates additional Food | - Destroy enemy dens scattered across the stage |
In addition, certain powerful Trait buffs that you gain at the end of each level can also further enhance that integration. For example, various Traits (e.g. - Wave Rider, For Crab God, Trapper Catcher) allow Gardeners, Scavengers, Builders, and Hunters to help with accruing both Food and Favour more quickly.
