Destiny 2 players love the Pathfinder system but it has one fatal flaw

Destiny 2's The Final Shape expansion has introduced many new mechanics, content, and places to explore for Guardians to sink their teeth into. Still, even some of the best systems introduced have received criticism for certain negative interactions. Today we're looking at the Pathfinder system and why the community is annoyed by a certain design flaw.

Reddit user Secht02 took to the Destiny subreddit to air their annoyances at the current Pathfinder system. They detail a specific moment that occurred recently due to it pushing for Guardians to "Defeat multiple Cabal combatants". As they were running strikes to pass the time, they realized many of their teammates were instantly leaving the group due to the current instance not featuring the Cabal. Out of 26 Guardians, they report three that didn't leave the group the moment they noticed there was no Cabal to defeat. Consequently, players have to deal with subpar matchmaking, longer queues, and generally low enjoyment from party members constantly leaving.

Commenters on the thread immediately agreed with Secht02's take on the Pathfinder system, despite believing that it is a positive change to the game overall. It has its problems, but the foundation and potential of the system is undeniable, but whether Bungie capitalizes on this remains to be seen.

Others aren't as pleased with the Pathfinder system and find it clunky, hard to access, and almost impossible to complete under certain circumstances. There is a lot of talk around the Crucible in the thread with players begging for the challenges to be reworked and made easier to achieve while in PvP.

My friends and I are guilty of dipping out of a strike that didn't have Cabal during our rush to achieve pinnacle. It's an unfortunate occupational hazard and this should have been taken into account by Bungie. Players love to min/max in MMOs and Destiny 2 is no different—if the node required Vex instead, then players would abandon Cabal strikes just as easily.

On the plus side, this problem has an easy fix and can be even hotfixed into the game in a single afternoon if Bungie is pressured enough. Simply changing "Defeat multiple Cabal combatants" to "Defeat enemy combatants, Cabal grants more progress" would be such an effective solution to the problem. Still, the Crucible problems and the emphasis on ignition effects need to be addressed.

I enjoy the Pathfinder system and it does an excellent job of pushing me to try new weapons and builds (like the Thundercrash Titan for instance), or even explore places I've neglected. While I appreciate this system, it still has its flaws and I hope Bungie takes another hard look at it so the problems and hiccups can be addressed before long.
