How to Transform, Fuse, & Switch Characters in Sparking Zero (Dragon Ball Sparking Zero)

Transform your way to victory in Sparking! Zero.

True to the spirit of the anime, Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is full of character transformations and fusions, from the various Super Saiyans to Frieza’s numerous forms and beyond. If you’re finding yourself unsure of how to transform, fuse, or switch characters, check out our guide below.

Transforming in Sparking! Zero is more than changing a character’s hair color. Transformations are their own separate characters complete with different super and ultimate blast attacks.

  • During battle, hold Up on the D-pad to bring up the transformation menu.
  • Press the corresponding button (A/X/Y/B on Xbox, Cross/Square/Triangle/Circle on PlayStation) to transform into the selected form.
  • You’ll need the appropriate amount of skill points to transform. More powerful transformations will require more skill points, but thankfully they build up gradually during the course of battle.
  • True to the anime, certain characters like Frieza or Cell can’t immediately jump from their first to final forms. If you’re playing as Frieza’s first form, you’ll have to cycle through his transformations to get to his fully powered up form.
  • Transformations are also tied to what era the characters are from. For example, Goku (Z-Mid) can’t transform into Super Saiyan Blue because it didn’t exist during Dragon Ball Z.

There are two transformations that aren't their own characters. Goku’s Kaio-ken technique is instead a skill for Goku (Z-Early) and Super Saiyan Blue Goku. It’s a very useful skill for early Goku’s Saiyan Saga battles and beautifully enhances Goku’s Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan form. Vegeta’s Super Saiyan Blue Evolved is also a temporary buff via Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan Vegeta’s Limits?! I Break Them! skill.

How to Fuse

Fusing in Sparking! Zero is just as useful as transforming. Some of the game’s top-tier characters, like Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta and Super Saiyan 2 Kefla, are fused characters.

  • During battle, hold Up on the D-pad. If playing as a character that is one half of a fusion, the fusion menus will show up behind the transformation menu.
  • Use RB/LB on Xbox and R1/L1 on PlayStation to cycle to the fusion menu.
  • Press the corresponding button to fuse into the fusion character.
  • Because fused characters are often very powerful, they’ll require more skill points to fuse.
  • Most importantly, you have to have both characters who are part of the fusion on your team. To fuse into Gotenks, for example, both Goten and Kid Trunks have to be on your team. Once fused, they’ll be replaced by the fusion character.
  • Be strategic with your fusing, as you can’t split the fusion during battle!

How to Switch Characters

Because you can have a maximum of five characters on your team, swapping them out is a great way to turn the tide of battle. You can put a heavily damaged character in reserve or bring out the big guns to finish off a fight.

  • Hold the left arrow on the D-pad to bring up the character switch menu.
  • Press the corresponding button to swap to a different character.
  • You can’t freely swap during battles. There’s a little yellow indicator underneath your character’s ki that displays if you can swap or not. If it’s full, you can swap fighters. Otherwise, you’ll have to hang tough with your chosen character while the switch indicator fills up.

Restrictions in Episode Battles

Because Sparking! Zero follows the anime series so closely, certain battles have transformation restrictions. You aren’t always given free rein to transform, and holding Up on the D-pad won’t bring up the transformation menu.

For example, when playing as Goku against Majin Buu, transforming is completely out of your control. Just as Goku cycles through his Super Saiyan transformations in the anime, he’ll do the same in this Episode Battle. Each transformation is dependent on Buu’s health, and the quicker you wear him down, the quicker Goku will transform. In some battles you can’t transform down back to base form either, like how Goku stays in Super Saiyan God form against Beerus.

During some Episode Battles, you can thankfully swap out characters. If you’re a better Frieza player than Gohan, you can instead have Frieza do the heavy lifting during Gohan’s Episode Battle against Dyspo. Conversely, during some fights characters will automatically get swapped in for you, like how Trunks takes over during certain Goku Episode Battles against Goku Black.

Sparking! Zero does such an impressive job of emulating Dragon Ball every step of the way, and its transformations and fusions reflect that well. Stay tuned to Pro Game Guides for more on Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero.
