How to fix crashing in Fallout London (Solved)

The total overhaul mod Fallout: London is a smash hit in the Fallout community, especially with the drought of new Fallout to play after the TV show dropped. Unfortunately though, some are experiencing frequent crashing with the game. If you're one of those, we have some ideas on how to fix it.

What to do if Fallout London is crashing (All solutions)

Fortunately, this isn't a case where you simply have to wait for the developer to fix the game; a variety of solutions are available. If one doesn't work for you, simply try the next (or a combination of them).

Disable decals

Open the Fallout 4 launcher and navigate to the 'Decals' option the graphics settings and disable them. This may only work if you're on an NVIDIA RTX series card (e.g. 2xxx, 3xxx, 4xxx series). If you can be bothered installing a mod however, the Weapon Debris fix below should be better.

Disable Weapon Debris

Turn this setting off in the graphics menu (via Fallout 4 launcher) is said to immediately fix stability for some users, and should only mean a minor hit to immersion.

Install Weapon Debris crash fix mod

Grabbing the Weapon Debris crash fix mod should get rid of your crashes, and without requiring you to lower graphics settings. You shouldn't need to worry about the dependencies listed as these are already taken care of when you set up Fallout: London.

Install Buffout 4 mod and modify launcher

This solution is more involved than the other two. Here are the steps:

  • Download Buffout 4 (one of the official recommended mods)
  • Navigate to your Fallout 4 install folder > Data > F4SE (either C:\GOG Games\Fallout 4 or Program Files(x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/Fallout 4). Overwrite this F4SE folder with the one in the Buffout 4 .zip file
  • Look for f4se_loader.exe inside your Fallout 4 install folder and make a shortcut to it (right click > Send to > Desktop - create shortcut)
  • Right click the desktop icon > Properties > Compatibility > Check 'Run as administrator'
  • Rename desktop icon Fallout: London (optional)
  • Launch using this icon

If you're still experiencing crashes, it's likely you need to use one of the two fixes above as well. Also, check out Buffout fixes.

Lower graphics settings

If disabling the options listed above don't work, you can go for the nuclear approach and lower all settings (to 'Low' or whatever you're comfortable with), or try the settings listed below (officially endorsed by the game's lead technical developer). Ideally you only have to do this temporarily to get around particularly crash prone sections (like the train ride).

Update graphics drivers

An oldie but a goodie, some users have reported doing this helps. As usual, head to the NVIDIA or AMD website to grab the latest drivers, or use their respective programs in your system tray.

Use Borderless Windowed mode

Change to this setting in graphics options (via the Fallout 4 launcher). Not an ideal solution, but if you're desperate, it does the trick for some players.

Disable 'read only' check box

A couple of Fallout 4 files have this option checked, which is said to cause problems. To change it, find the files, right click and select Properties, then check the Read Only box.

  • CustomControlMap.txt (C:\GOG Games\Fallout 4 or Program Files(x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/Fallout 4)
  • f4se.txt (install folder (see above line) > Data > F4SE )

Verify mod installs are in correct folder

If you happen to be installing mods to a Fallout: London folder, try installing them instead to your Fallout 4 folder (C:\GOG Games\Fallout 4\Data or Program Files(x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/Fallout 4\Data).

Tweak files

BakaScrapHeap.toml

Find the BakaScrapHeap.toml file on your computer (C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Fallout 4 GOTY\Data\F4SE\plugins\BakaScrapHeap.toml for GOG users and Documents\My Games\Fallout4 for Steam users). Open it with Notepad and change ScrapHeapMult = 2 to ScrapHeapMult = 4. This fix is endorsed by the game's lead technical developer.

config.toml

Find the config.toml file on your computer (C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Fallout 4 GOTY\Data\F4SE\plugins\Buffout4\config.toml for GOG users and Documents\My Games\Fallout4 for Steam users) and open this file with Notepad. Change the MemoryManager setting from 'true' to 'false' and save. This fix is endorsed by the game's lead technical developer.

Fallout4Prefs.ini

Navigate to C:\Users\YOURNAME\Documents\My Games\Fallout4\Fallout4Prefs.ini or Documents\My Games\Fallout4, open Fallout4Prefs.ini with Notepad, and look for the [NVFlex] section. Change the values in this section as follows and save:

  • bNVFlexEnable=0
  • iQuality=0
  • bNVFlexInstanceDebris=0
  • bNVFlexDrawDebris=0

How to fix crashing after train in Fallout: London

One official developer recommendation is to press T when the logo animations appears post-train ride, which some say works (others say it doesn't). Another fix reported to get around the issue is to crouch and look down as soon as you enter the train. Other fixes throughout this guide can help as well (particularly those concerning Buffout, settings, and tweaks).
