FF7 Rebirth State of Play breakdown: New story content, gameplay footage, minigames & more!

Thank Minerva; there was no equivalent of "Zack's boot" here.

Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth is just around the corner, and Square Enix is here to show us its (hopefully) last batch of reveals in today’s State of Play trailer. Here's a breakdown of all the new things we saw.

Surprisingly, there is no disturbingly spoiler-y footage. Plus, we did get a ton of new information!

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth shows off more things than fans were expecting

The FF7 Rebirth team aims to bring a familiar experience while also throwing old fans a ton of curveballs in the form of fresh new story, new areas to explore, unique worldly interactions, and my personal favorite: new minigames!

For example, aside from FF7 original areas like Junon and Corel, players will now be able to traverse and explore the ocean that separates entire continents in the game. And while we get all of our fan-favorite minigames such as 3D brawler and G Bike fantasy racing, we’re also getting entirely new ones, such as a card game called Queen’s Blood, as well as improved versions of the minigames that existed in Final Fantasy VII: Remake, such as the box smashing one.

Also, look at how HUGE Gongaga is here!

More Chocobo colors were also shown off, such as a blue one that could fly, though whether Chocobo breeding is in the game is still up in the air. They revealed more information about the Chadley side questing as well, with these Protorelics looking like how they will be the key to unlocking more summons.

Overall, it looks like they’re really maximizing that 150GB of internal storage needed to run the game. After all, it looks like we’ll be spending more than a hundred hours mosey-ing in the main story alone.

New party and character mechanics

The past Rebirth trailers have already shown of Synergy commands (team attacks), so we’ll skip that. What’s newly shown, however, is a sample Golden Saucer date scene with Tifa… along with the announcement that we’ll be able to grow Cloud's relationship with characters “other” than the ones we already could in the original game.

A date with Vincent, anyone?

Each member of Cloud’s party will also be able to interact with the world in a unique way, whether it’s to help them solve puzzles or discover new areas. For example, Aerith can manipulate the lifestream as shown below.

Red XII can climb unpassable areas for humans (like mountains), Cait Sith can throw heavy objects, and more!

State of Play trailer shows where FF7 Rebirth plans to end

Speaking of story, the FF7 Rebirth State of Play trailer also introduces some pretty shocking scenes—more so for avid fans who’ve played the original. Snippets of the Forgotten City were revealed, along with scenes related to the Black Materia, disputing a common theory that the game will be ending in Forgotten City... probably.

However, fans of old will probably notice some pleasantly disturbing twists, much like how the Black Materia can help free them from the “Endless Loop” and a conversation with Cloud and Cissnei. Plus, with all the dialogue they've revealed, "The world will be saved, but will you?" is looking more and more like a statement for Cloud than it is for Aerith.

Here’s the trailer so you can see what I’m talking about for yourself.

A playable demo of FFVII Rebirth is available today

The FF7 Rebirth State of Play showcase also announced that a playable demo of the Nibelheim flashback and selected parts of the journey to Junon will be playable starting today. You can download it on your PS5 right now!

Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth will exclusively release on the PlayStation 5 on February 29, 2024.
