How to make more Coal in Frostpunk 2

Never know when you might need more Coal!

When it comes to staying warm in Frostpunk 2, knowing how to make the most of your fuel sources is undeniably important for survival. While it may not be the endgame, Coal is one of the game's most resilient and versatile fuel types. Here's how to make more Coal in Frostpunk 2.

Most efficient Coal extraction in Frostpunk 2

The first method of obtaining Coal in Frostpunk 2 is to extract it from the Shallow Coal Seams near the central district of New London. As the city grows, however, you'll find yourself needing more and more to satisfy demand. To help balance that demand you need to find other methods of producing more Coal that Extraction Districts can't always provide on their own.

Research Dust Coal Mine

First and foremost, to make the most of those Shallow Coal Seams, after building your Extraction Districts, you should research the Dust Coal Mine (the Blasting Coal Mine will exhaust deposits more quickly, and you want them to last, regardless of Faction favor) and build at least one. This will help extend the life of those Coal Seams, even well into Chapter 3 after the initial Whiteout storm.

Research Charcoal Regeneration Plant

Next, once you've begun extracting the Wood Materials from the Vast Frozen Forests in the southern sections of New London, you need to research the Idea for the Charcoal Regeneration Plant, which will help use those Wood Materials to produce Charcoal.

While it performs the same basic function, we don't necessarily recommend the Pyrolytic Charcoal Plant as it doesn't produce as much Coal output and requires more Heat Demand (something you should minimize everywhere possible). Once you've researched that Idea, build your Charcoal Regeneration Plant in one of your Extraction Districts to put it into practice. The more of them you can build, the higher your Coal stockpile will grow.

Find Coal in Frostlands

Don't forget, you can also further boost those Coal stores by scouting the Frostlands and finding outposts in various regions with sources of Coal ripe for the taking. Use your available Frostlander teams to set up a supply line that will last you for a considerable amount of time until the source eventually runs dry.

Abandon Coal and switch to Oil

Remember that Coal is not as important in the later stages of the game, so look to fill your reserves and focus on finding Oil. As soon as you establish a colony with Oil reserves, you won't need Coal anymore. You can use surplus coal reserves to help colonies that still use them. Don't forget to close coal mines in Frostlands when orienting to Oil to have more people available for Frostland exploration.
