Square-Enix has unveiled Kingdom Hearts IV, shocking the world for the franchise's 20th anniversary with a new trailer depicting Sora in a Tokyo-like metropolis. The setting is Quadratum, based on Tokyo's Shibuya district, but why does Kingdom Hearts IV have fans questioning whether it's based on Square-Enix's canceled Final Fantasy Versus XIII?
How is Kingdom Hearts 4 related to Final Fantasy Versus XIII?
Quadratum originally appeared near the conclusion of Kingdom Hearts III, in which Riku dreams of it, and Sora is transported there. Kingdom Hearts III's DLC features a battle against a character named Yozora, who was going to be the main character of Versus XIII but now bears an unmistakable resemblance to Final Fantasy XV's Noctis.
Versus XIII was originally planned to be released on Playstation 3 as a companion to Final Fantasy XIII. Square-Enix intended it to focus on themes pertaining to "a fantasy based on reality." However, the project was rebranded as Final Fantasy XV—being too late a release for that generation and too complicated a production.
Given the unabashed realist aesthetic of Quadratum and the story implications of Yozora, it's within reason to expect the universes of Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy XIII are linked—but we can't wait to find out for sure.
